In addition to the buying by sellers of
Tuesday there was considerable corn
taken on by speculators who secured
profits by making purchases.
The situation In corn as well as wheat
will continue to hinge on the cash arti
cle. It dullness Is seen In these channels
there Is little on which to buy either one
of these grains. It Is now getting rather
late in the season for damage claims to
be made In the winter wheat belt, but In
years gone by there have been severe
losses trom thawing and freezing as late
as early April. With a crop promise of
over 600,000,000 bushels ot winter wheat
and with the vlslblo supply a liberal one,
the likelihood ot an advance in wheat
values Is distant.
The Cnlcago speculative wheat world Is
taking a hand In nearly all of the outside
markets, as was shown by heavy selling
of Chicago May at Winnipeg yesterday.
The same speculators bought the de
ferred months at Chicago. One ot the
loading exporters in Canada said that on
the decline in wheat there have been
small sales ot Manitoba for open water
shipment. This wheat was taken by ex
porters at the seaboard. New York re
ported ten loads old crop hard winter
wheat as sold there on Tuesday, and
thera were some sales of wheat made by
Chicago houses to the eastern seaboard.
Cash oats wero generally easy In all the
markets and some ot the leading shipping
concerns were advising customers to sell
on all the rallies, because of general ab
sence In the demand for that grain.
Provisions closed at small advances on
the strength In hogs at the yards and tho
advance In grain prices. There .was some
profit taking on longs on hard spots, but
the offerings were well taken care of.
Cash trade conditions In meats nnd lard
were reported as unchanged and quiet.
wasn wneat was uncnanged.
Cash corn was unchanged to He higher.
Cash oats were unchanged to Uc higher.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Feature of the Trading? and Closing-
Prices on tlnnrcl of Tradr.
CHICAGO, April 2. Green bugs in Okla
homa and the Hessian flv elsewhere had
a scarecrow effect todav on short flellnr
of wheat. Largely In consequence, the
market closed firm at lie to ,444c net
advance. There was a gain, too, In all
tho other speculative articles corn We,
pats W,4c to Uc and provisions biwiVrt
to 12'4c.
Although none of the advices in regard
to Insect pests In tho fields asserted any
existing damage and nothwlthlne that n
majority of exports were disposed to make
11 an 1 ot sucn news, most ot the wheat
snorts would take no chances. It was
pvldent the market had been somewhat
oversold and that for the time being at
lease the prudent course was to cover.
Samples of Oklahoma wheat. M In
contain truo specimens ot green bugs,
were exhibited to traders here, but were
ot so certified by any entomologist. The
extent or injury trom the Hessian fly was
declared, by good authority to depend on
April weather when the brood la develop
ing. Last spring cold, rainy weather acted
aa a check ana therefore damage predic
tions wero unrealized.
Omaha reports ot some export sales for
clearance by way of the gulf formed the
chief influence on the wheat market prior
to tho Hurry about the danger of Insect
depredation becoming a serious menace.
Corn prices were nervous, though within
a comparatively narrow range. The late
strength In wheat brought about consider
able buying. Report In regard to do
mestic cash business wero contradictory
and so also were tidings relative to
Argentina shipments. Talk of a carload
ot the South American grain having been
sold to como to Chicago by way of
Montreal was not generally given much
weight. Liverpool expects a decrease In
stocks. Oats had some Independent
strength because of continued seeding de
lays from wet weather.
Smaller receipts of hogs than expected
here and In the west made the provision
market bulge. Signs pointed to only 108,000
hoga arriving In Chicago this week,
against 178,000 for the corresponding week
a year ago.

This was harrilv KnAiirl, .
."" .r the four sy,) this week re
.tu.J001. up J,'1U' being the
smallest of any similar period thus far
this week, but still receipts aro about on
a. par with the corresponding week of
last year. Receipts at all other market
j.inn were correspondingly light, and
there were really not more than enough
cattle at the four big markets to make
a. good run for one market.
Ty. reaj,on of the light receipts at all
j-umiB mo mirnei on an Kinus or Killing
cattle was anywhere from strong to
quite a little higher again this morning.
It would be safe to say that the fat
eieers, cows and heifer are back where
they wero at the close ot last week, all
of the decline early this week having
been recovered and In some cases pos
sibly more, too.
Blockers and feeders have not shown
much change, as tho country demand
has been very meager and the few cattle
received nave not met with any too
ready sale.
It would be well for the country to
thoroughly understand that the advance
reported at all market points yesterday
and today has been duo to the light re
ceipts and not to any Improvement in
the demand for cattle. Tho feeling is
general everywhere that big runs next
week would simply break tho market
down again, and all operators are ad
vising their friends In tho country to
follow a conservative policy In the mat
ter of shipments for some little time to
come.

HOGS Receipts were very light again
this morning, only lot cars, or about 7.2UO
head, being received. For the week tli
total Is 27,633, being over 14.000 smaller
than last wek, and 18,(00 short of the
same period last year. The four days'
total Is the smallest since Christmas
week, when only a little over 23,400 head
showed up on the first four market days.
With so small a run In sight and other
market reporting strengthened prices,
the local market looked good for a aharp
advance, and salesmen priced their hold
ings about a dime higher than yesterday's
general market. Buyers tried for a while
to put up their droves at a to advance,
but light receipts all week have nut th
demand In a pretty healthy shape, and h
sellers refused to cut loose .t the early

The decision of tho court that holders
