Suffragettes Eout
Council with Bombs
and Unsavory Smells
LONDON, March 27. An extraordinary
suffragette disturbance occurred today at
a meeting of the Poplar Borough coun
ell, which had voted adversely to using
council halls for suffragette meetings.
With shouts of "cowards" and other
offensive epithets, a large number of
women lnVaded that section of the hall
reserved for the councillors. Bombs con
taining evil smelling chemicals were ex
ploded by tho scores and bags of flour
and stones .were, flung at the members.
The councillors' Were soon struggling;
with the Infuriated Women, many of
whom; ;were armed with bludgeons and
bottles.
Shrieks and shouts, the smashing of
glass and the splintering of chairs com
pleted one of the worst scenes of pande
monium In the history of the suffragette
movement. Tho police for somo reason
refrained from Interference.
Tho mayor retained the chair In a vain
ehdeaVor to resume the council proceed
ings, but finally the council beat a re
treat, leaving the women In possession
of the. hall, with a few socialist members
Of the council, who remained to hear
speeches delivered by Mlse. Zelle Emerson
of Jackson, Mich., and others.
Local Product Is Having Contlder-
nble Trouble to Overcome the
Cheaper Cereal from
Argentine Republic,
OMAHA, March 27. 1914.
The bulls In corn received a sham rap
across tho speculative knuckles yesterday.
Th fact that Argentine corn. Is becoming
more and more ot a drawback to the price
of American corn was shown more clearly
yesterday than at any time since that
corn commenced to come within our bor
ders. The big longs were on the run,
and whllo they sold all the corn that
the trade cared to absorb, they handled
the market with gloves In order to pre
vent a sensational break. There was somo
resistance to the pressure by tho longs.
and It was believed at midday that the
market was likely to react and regain
the losses made early In the day.
me entering wedge or onars was a re
port from Kansas City saying that the
edge was off tho cash demand there,
temporarily at least, and that consid
erable corn was carried over Wednesday
n hrht unsold. The markets of the country
all reported a slack demand for the cash
article, with tho exception of Omaha, and
inero were reported sales over nmni in
this market of 135,0)0 bushels.
The corn market Is now a world s prop
osition and lt Is difficult for the old-time
traders to accustom themselves to the
change. Weather In Argentina Is Improv
ing and the harvest of corn Is being
rushed and whllo the early receipts are
absorbed tho distant offers are dragging.
Tho wheat market was something ot a
surprise to tho average speculator because
of strength displayed. Tho May future
closed unchanged and the more deferred
months were &c higher When the fact
Is considered that the corn market sold
off sharply and that conditions surround
ing tho grain were quite bearish the
strength shown by wheat was an enigma,
to many. It was believed that tho May
futuro was being sold steadily during the
entire day by longs who were anxious to
get out of their lines because ot favorable
crop prospects and that the July and
September were bought tiy the same
people In order to sustain the May.
Oats followed In the footsteps of corn yes
terday. Cash trade was slack and pri
mary receipts were heavier than last
year.
The east was a heavy seller of May
and July ribs and lord, while the big Mil
waukee packers were buyers ot May ribs
and Armour and other packers took the
May lard. John and Charles Roberts
were big sellers ot hog products, which
waa thought to be for some ot the big
packers.

down speculation to minimum propor

traders had few oportunltlea and In tho
latter part of the day they left the mar

was at a standstill most of tho time.
The discouraging feature, from the.
standpoint of traders committed to tho

that no severe pressure waa directed

most conspicuously among these Btocks,
falling back 3 points. Pittsburgh, Chi

Pacific and Northwestern was also heavy,
t'nlon Pacific's February net fell off 8512,-

Of the Industrials, American sugar was
especially heavy. Its decline n at
