MISS IUMA GROSS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Gross, 2963 Popploton avenue, was ono of several hundred militant co-eds at the University of Chicago, who recently wont on a "hunger strlko" because the food, service and general management of the girls' dining rooms at the university woro not maintained to their liking. In protest against the conditions which followed, a change In management, and on account of their complaints being ignored, they re fused to cat and did not renew their patronago of the school cafes until the college authorities Intervened in their behalf. News of the "hunger strike" was suppressed by the university au thorities, but finally leaked out through lotters which the "militant' co eds wrote home. Tho parents and friends of Miss Gross in Omaha have learned of her part in tho uprising from lettors which they have just re ceived, telling the details of tho strike from the viewpoint "2 the students. Miss Gross is a' 1910 Graduate of tho Omaha High school and Is now a Junior at the University of Chicago. According to the complaints of the co-eds, they wore no longer al lowed to have their breakfasts sent up to their rooms when they slept late, and midnight lunches of left-over lco cream and other delicacies from the dinner table were no longer available to girls returning from evening par ties and theaters. Tho food was said to bo unsatisfactory, and sometimes insufficient In quantity, to satisfy the appetites of tho more athletic maid ens. The maid service was not salisfactory. When tho new management ignored the protestis of the fair ones, who thought they nhould bo better treated at 4.G0 per week, they dccldod to revolt, and In a body refused ono morning to go to breakfast. Tho girls say they Were not long In demonstrating' to tho university authorities that they wero entitled to a change In conditions, and now they aro back at tho dining rooma for their threo meals each day, wiilob. they report to bo receiving satisfactorily, along with tho othor things for which they had gone, on strike. Tuesday Bridge Club, Mrs. Waller Roberts was hostess this week ut tho meeting of tho Tuesday Ilrldgo club. The afternoon was spent sewing for the Child Savins Institute. Mrs, O. C. J OGDEN ARMOUR TO BE IN OMAHA NEXT WEEK Enroute to his home In Chicago, J. Ogden Armour, ono of the millionaire packers, will spend twenty-four hours In Omaha after wintering In California. Mr. Armour, In his private car, Walworth, will arrive In the city next Tuesday evening at 5:30 over tho Union Pacific He will remain until the following eve ning, when at 6:50 he will leave for the east over the Milwaukee.
