CORN MARKET SLOW AND FIRM Cash Wheat Vnehnnired, While Cash Oats and Corn Miott "light In creasct In Price, but Fevr Trades Ape Reported. OMAHA. March 18. IMi. There was h'fcvy selling of the May wheat futuro at Chicago yesterday by New York longs, one concern alone throwing 400,000 bushels Into the pit and another house sold 250,000 bushels. I'i addition to this there was some May thrown overboard by scattered small holders. Some of the wise people in the wheat market pronounce this selling a choice between getting rid of the cra'n at the present time or resorting to tnelr cnecK dook and putting up additional margins later. It Is believed that the larger holders of the May wheat In thU market will continue to give the bears all the rope they require, and that they will eventually have very little companv as holders of May wheat. When travel ing! alone conditions will doubtless show a nartlal chance In favor ot the longs. It wiij be an easy matter to re-establish the line already sola out by these people. who Inaugurated the selling movement some weeks ago, and In case thero Is portage of good size these shorts will feel the tightness of the situation ar.-l will be oblleed to cover at losses. It was given out on good authority last nlgnr that not only New York speculators, but those in the northwest are still liberal holders of May wheat here. One ot the larger professionals said last night that he was long a good lino ot July In the expectation that a change In the tenor of the crop reports will soon be seen Lna that the matter of profits will then lo easy. while It was said after the close last night that the bids for wheat from abroad were only a shado from a work ing basis, there were no sates gixen out. Borne concerns at Chics ko are holders of wheat east of there, and In case of Bales being mado the stocks closest to tho sea board will be used for shipment abroad. Corn looka like a waiting proposition. While holders refuse to liquidate because mnnv of them would nutfor losses. On the other hand, shorts show no signs of weakening. The market and prices have narrowed down to a weather affair and if the farmer are enabled to go Into the fields and remain there tor a few weeks It will be seen that receipts ot corn will drop off sharply. As in corn, the oats market was slow, total cash sales being only 100,000 bushels. The large westcVn hog run. the decline of 6fjfl0c In price at the yards, together with tho bearish semi-monthly statistics, were the controlling bearish lntluences Business was largely local, except for a few sales of lard by packers. Cash wheat was unchanged. Cash corn was M31V4-C higher. Cash oats were YM'Ao hlfcher. Clearances: Wheat and tiour equal to 270,000 bushels, corn, l.coo bushels and oats, 28,000 bushels. Llvorpool closed with wheat unchanged to '.id higher and corn KJ h'8hr-, Primary' wheat receipts were 393,000 bu. and shipments of 357,000 bu. against re ceipts of 61,000 bu. and shipments ot 456,000 bu. last year. , Primary corn receipts were .21.000 bu. and shipments of 630,000 bu. against ro celpts of 803,000 bu. and shipments of 623,000 bu. laat year. , Primary oate receipts were 783.000 bu. and shipment of 847,000 bu. against re celnta of 725.000 bu. and shipment of 72i.floo bu. last year. . . , The following cash sales were reported: Wheat No. .1 hard winter: 1 car. In wheaU the outcome Varied from a sixteenth decline to i&i gain, oats finished wsw to m tip, ana provisions varying from 6c loss to a Use of a shade. Broad activity as weel strength mane the cornplt the center of interest most of the day. Reports from Missouri markets told of tne largest cash aai.;s or the season, and there was alio a notice able improvement nera in tne eastern ooTuma ovaniY rDccivio in -iuc&ku who ac companied by advices that an Increase was unlikely, country roads as a rule having broken up. Moreover, ralna In Argentina provoxea again tne oread or a wet narvesi. Lively covering by shorts In corn tock place, and included the .lurrendar of some of the chief speculators the tvrur aide. Bulls were rampant because of mugn greater advances at Kan las city and Omaha than here. On the other hand, )ublui ocub ivvm wiui in niKner nrics were attracting Argentine corn, end that several cargoes naa usen pougllt there today to arrive. Wheat traders thinned out to attend the more cxciung scenes in the corn crowd. It was therefore difficult to bring- about any good action tn wheat fufa-ea.
