OMAHA, March 11. 1911. , There are many bars in the wheat market at Chicago who are of the opinion that when prices are weak and declining the matter ot a reaction and advance Is out ot tho question. Traders of that stripe wcro In complete control of tho situation during yesterday morning and they sold wheat to a standstill, never dreaming that they would bo -arced to reckon with tho bulls before tno close ot tho day. The hour of reckoning arrived, however, toward the close of tho ses sion, and the shorts were falling over cacn otner in an endeavor to regain the wheal tnrown into tho pit during the morning. in addition to an oversold situation, mere were messages from Johnson county, Kansas, which is in tho eastern portion of that state, saying that the soft wheat plant there is dead frozen out and that tho reports come from growers and are generally credited. Kansas City bought somo wheat hero yesterday which was believed to be n reflection" of belief in tho southwest of probable crop deteriora tion. Cash wheat was 1ic higher. For more than a fortnight the cash wheat market at Chicago has been dis couraging to holders, many ot whom have become weary and who disposed of their futures as well as their cash. It was hinted by some exporters Monday that the bids from abroad were pretty close to a working basis and a message from ono of tho leading grain concerns at Winnipeg said that exporters with direct foreign connections were heavy buyers of spot wheat the laet few days In that market and that they paid tho closest dif ference that No. 3 northern hai been traded In for round lots, There alo was buying at Winnipeg ot deferred positions. Corn sympathized with the action cf wheat, being in an oversold condition, and shorts wero active buyers In order to even up their position, Resting spots wero HSic higher. Those In the trade who have watched tho cash situation closest believe the advances of yesterday will fall to hold. There are a great many longs, however, who are confident and who believe that the cash situation must Improve, owing to tho small stocks In all positions. Cash corn was 'W?mc higher. Strong factions were arrayed against one another In the provision market. Tho Milwaukee Cudahys were probably the largest buyers of May pork and ribs, and In addition to this there was some In vestment buying. Tho selling was also Influential in character, as It was laid at the door or one of the larger packers. The ranh trade In meats was a Uttlebct- ter. whllo lard was still reported as slow Cash oats were lie higher. Clearances wero: Wheat and flour equal to 493,000 bu.; corn, none; oats, 8,000 bu. Wheat prices di vided today, becoming firmer for the new crop, but weaker for the old. Dam age reports were numerous, export and milling demand zero. Heaviness pre velled at tho close which varied from K(&v,a decline a U',ic advance, com pared with last night. Corn finished l-16c off to c up, and oats with a gain of a shade to lie In provisions, the outcome was a rlso of 6c to 7!4?U0e. News of the Injury of fall sown wheat came chiefly from the light soil sections of western Kansas and Nebraska. Some of the harm referred to was said to be from freezing, but most of the damage was attributed to high winds blowing tho wmm uui oi tne grouna. excellent au thorities at Omaha and Kansas City, however, agreed that complaints were the least important known in a decade at this time of the season. First purchases of new crop wheat this year were made here today. Tho amount oougni was su.vw ousneis part to arrive In Chicago by July 20, tho rest at any time In July, Prices Agreed on were half under quotations for the the July option, and were to bo for No. 2 red or No. 2 hard, which ever the shippers might elect. Tho wheat is to como from Illinois, In corn, a revival of cash demand at Buffalo, Kansas City and here gave the market an upward slant. Signs that receipts would bo smaller tended to in crease tho confidence of the bulls. It was gossip that one conspicuous short covered as much as a million bushels while prices were on the advance. Oats reflected the strength shown In corn. Theie was a good deal of In fluential selling by commission houses, though whenever the bulge seemed to assume undue proportions. Attempts at the out set to extend the rise were checked by largo selling of American Sugar and the eastern railroad shares. Sugar fell to the lowest point since 1907 Rending, New Haven and New York Cen tral developed heaviness. The whole lift softened. . Pressure lllmlnlsliPil In lh lntlr nnrl of tho day nnd among the Industrials tnrro were numerous points or strength. Railroad shares, however, exhibited fur ther weakness. Rock Island common at 414 and tho preferred at 71i nnd the collat erals at 40 touched now' low records,, western Pacific 6s dropped 4 points tn n low record at 69. v. Tho Improvement among tho Industrials was helped on by good reports from tho Iron nnd steel trade. Low priced copper shares were bought on Indications of an Increased demand for the metnl. Steels' annual report showed nn in crease, of $3,638,000 In gross profits. Sloss Sheffield's yearly statement gave a gain In net of $143,000. The weekly reviews of trade authorities, however, said that cur rent business In finished steel was sloiv. American Sugar's recent decline was explained by the sharp decrenso In earn ings shown in the annual report. Gross prolfts for 1913 were $3,303,000 under tho preceding year.
