The Liverpool wheat market was id
lower yesterday with the larger world's
shipments nnd the lack of cash demand
the principal bearish factors, according
to a special cable. It will take good buy
ing of grain In that market to absorb the
Increased offerings from Australia as well
as Russia, together with that from other
countries and according to the. latest
cable advices the demand there Is any
thing hut good. It Is said by some that
a great deal ot wheat that is to go to
importing countries is wheat that was
rold some time ago, and which is now
being placed on the ocoan for shipment to
its destination. It was some time ago
that Russia was inclined to hold Its
wheat, being backed by the government
in a financial way, but the growers there
aro now offering their grain upon tho
market ot the world, and offerings aro
likely to bo felt In tho matter of price
making.
Many reports coming to tho Chicago
markets from abroad aro very mislead
ing. As an Illustration, It Is only neces
sary to Point to the calamitous talk re
ceived at various times from Australia
Tho crop has been reduced there so many
times by people who wcro recognized ns
Experts and it has been said that the
nurplus in that country has been gobbled
up by Importers, Including Japan, that it
was' generally believed there would be
no wheat sent out of that country. It
now transpires, however, that Australia is
to become a liberal shipper again, as
noted In the shipments ot this week.
Argentina is not likely to develop as
even a moderate shipper of breadstuff,
although it is said that low grade wheat
in that country Is being otrerca lor snic,
while tho best descriptions nro being
held for millers thero and for which
higher prices are being asked.
, The strength shown In tho Winnipeg
wheat market yesterday whs probably
the result of export takings there, as It
was that export Interests were buyers ot
May futures, and that this was a reflec
tion of business In the cash article. Dur
ing several days of last week James
Carruthers & Co. afnd Norrls & Co., as
well os two other exporting concerns,
woro reported as buyers of May wheat
in Winnipeg, and this it was claimed was
h gainst sales for shlpmont abroad.
Those who believe that wheat Is high
enough for tho present point to tho al
most perfect crop conditions in tho United
States, as well as to the good-sized vis
ible supply, coapled with lack of demanu
on cash account. They also referred to
the lack ot business In the flour markets
Of tho entire world and to the cutting of
prices by tho larger millers ot the wejt
to prevent the accumulation ot stocks
ot flour and to being forced to accept
much lower prices in case the winter
wheat belt escapes a crop scare.
Cash wheat was unchanged.
Conditions surrounding corn have been
quite unfavorable to holders for somo
time paBt, and whilo tho cash business
has failed to develop and tho stocks are
large. In Chicago, as well as In tho visible
supply, new friends have come to the
front. The bulls have accumulated fair
sized lines of late and it looks now as it
they Intend to stand on them until such
a time as thero Is a crop available.
Cash corn was He higher to o lower.
Oats aro likely to follow the price
changes in corn, and It has been noticed
the last few days that there was a llttlo
more strength to this market, and this,
too. In tho face of onlya moderate busi
ness In tho cash article, but this was par
tially .balanced by the smaller receipts at
Chicago.

stocks today were the smallest ot the
year. Front opening to close quotations
of tho Important stocks barely varied.
London cabled lower prlcivs for some

placed a few selling orders here at tho
opening, principally in stoel. Bear traders
made experimental short sales jid prices
dropped slightly. But tho demand was
sufficient to prevent a substantial de

wero held virtually on a dead level.
In the railroad list stocks ot the Uould

Speculators and shipper nnd one ot the
puckers started out In good seaoon this
morning, buying light and light mixed
hogs at prices that were not over 5c
lower and In some case were quoted as
nearly steady. During the early rounds
not much of anything was done on tho
heavier atuff, but after the buyer who
went out early began to get filled up,
packer opened up on the butcher and
heavy grades, making their first bids at
figure that looked to be all of 10c lower.
Salesmen started out offering their best
hog at ateady figure and for quite a
while they refused to cut looso at the
sharp decline proposed, but In the end
