T11E BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1914. 13 GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET News from Southwest Says Wheat is Deteriorating. MARKET IS NOT ENCOURAGING Cnh Grnln In Not In Very Oooil Light Corn Close Somevrltnt Lower, with Luck at Im mcillntr Demand. . OMAHA. Feb. 20. 19U. As predicted for some tlmo any change in the southwestern wheat promlso will bo tor the worse, and tho first messages from that section making claims of de terioration were received hero yosterday. These camo from northern Texas, western Oklahoma and parts of Kansas and Ne braska and tho messages wcro received at a tlmo when wheat was at tho low est of tho session near tho close. Some of those who sold early changed front and wilt be seen on the buying side, TPhlch caused reactions of UJTtto and while the May was tho smallest fraction lower, tho July was a little higher. Had the deterioration reports been received earlier In tho day and tho trade generally cognizant of tho contents of messages a different story would doubtless havo been related here. Generally speaking tho crop outlook In tho winter wheat belt. Is tho beet ever known and for this reason there will bo a chango and any change will be a help to tho bulls. Crop damage and war are two things that will frighten tho average speculator oat of his wits in caso ho is short on tho market. The cash situation Is anything but en couraging to hbldcrs of that grain. Sales yesterday wcro 65.000 bushels and moro than one-half of this was taken by ex porters at tho seaboard. Omaha had nn excellent demand for wheat from Chi cago, as well as from northwestern and Interior millers, and this market claimed tp havo received numerous Inquiries for export. One message said that Winnipeg was a seller of wheat for foreign ship ment, but others said tho best bids wore IHo out of line. ' Cash wheat was unchanged to Uo higher. Corn doted about Mc lower for May and 4o lower for July, while September was about unchanged. Thero was a lack of. cash demand, with .lies of only 85,000 bushels and this caused uonsldcrabI6 sell ing, coupled with tho fact that Argontlno corn parcels wero offered c, 1. f. Atlantic ports at 68J4o first half of March ship ment. .Cosh corn was unchanged to o lower. Oats closed without much change, with tho May strong. This market followed tho course of corn. Country offerings were moderate and tho cash business was email. Cash oats wero unchanged. Liquidation of hog products was popu lar yestcraay ana prices closed lower. The hog report of Germany, which showed an increase of 4,000,000 hogs over a year1 ago, and tho weakness In tho market at the yards wcro the leading bear factors. The buying was led by commission houses, although some of tho early sellers bought late In tho day. Tho Chicago and Omaha markets will be closed Monday, February 23, to ob serve Washington's birthday. Clearances: Wheat and flour, 617,003 du.; corn, none; oats, e.wv du. Later, the fact de veloped that liberal sales hid been brought about hero to exporters for shlp irent from the Atlantic seaboard. Domestic weather and crop conditions almost without blemish formed the chief obstacle to a moro decided upturn In the wheat market. The contrast Jn this resppct vvh other countries was qulto usual, Russia and France reporting -winter Killing, inula rains wnicn spoiled tho harvest, nnd Australia forebodings of trouble from drouth.
