Had It not been for tno snow which

In Kansas mid Nrhrtukn. there Is a
possibility that the growing plant would
nave been more or less crippled. In Ne
braska tho temperatures wcro 2 to 20
below and in Kansas they were from 4
below to 12 nbove A prlvnto report re
ceived from Garden City, Kan., however,
claimed It was 10 bolow. There was a
continuation of sates of cash wheat by
dealers In Nebraska, and this moro than
anything else reflected tho position of
tho farmers, as well as the country ele
vator men of this state. The wheat ter
ritory east of the Mississippi river was
well covered with snow, and there was
no uneasiness whatever because of the
cold wave. A moderate Inquiry was re
ported for cash wheat at Chicago for
domestic and milling purposes, nnd there
was more Inquiry from the seaboard by
exporters, which resulted In the taking
of a few boat loads. Minneapolis mill
ers were fair buyers of the cosh article,
and stocks in that market decreased 00,000
bushels for the week, while Duluth In
creased 112.000 bushels for five days.
One of the larger cash handlers of
wheut In the Chicago market advanced
the opinion yesterday that we ore ap
proaching the time when Europo will be
comneiled to Come to Us for bread stuffs.
The Argentina exportable surplus was
again reaucea yesteraay, ana nouce was
given that a further reduotlon Is likely
to be made later on. The snipments
from thit country during tho week were
disappointing to the Importing countries
of the world, as there were l.RlG.OOO
bushels, against 1XC8.C00 bushels for the
same period last year. Advices from
Argentine says tne receipts irom me in

quality Is unsatisfactory.

ot this improvement is das to greater activity in the financial markets, but It also
reflects soma expansion in ordinary business operations. Most Irregularity Is shown
lo the returns of tho outside cities, only two sections, the South and the Central
States, reporting an Incrtare over last year, bnt wblle tbe total Is 1.2 per cent smaller
than in 1013, there is a gala In comparison with two years ago of 8 6 per cent Boston,
Providence and Portland report more or less contraction ss compared with both years,
and thoueh there Is subitartlal Improvement at moat other centers, the total ot the
New England States shows losses of 4.6 and 6.8 per cent. Mott of ths larger citlos
in the Middle Atlantle States, notably Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Uoehoster
and Wheeling, show decreases from twelve months ago, but Improvement Is general com
pared with 1812 and there Is a good gala over that period. Logtes at Baltimore and
some other cities in the South Atlantic States occsalon some falling off in the total
ot that section from a year ago, but a fairly satisfactory comparison Is made with
1912. Gains at St Lonlt, New Orleans, Louisville and some other cities In the Sonth
mora than offset contraction at the remaining centers and the total is larger than
In either year. Practically all the leading centers in tha Central Btatea report mors
r less Improvement as compared with earlier eorreipondtng periods, sad tho total
makes qnlte a satisfactory comparison with both 1913 and 1012. Although a number
t cities In the Western States report gains over both years, notably St Paul, Des
Molncs, Sioux City, Omaha, Fremont and Lincoln, then Is a small loss compared
with last year owing to the falling oS at jMlnneapoltsDulutb, Kansas City, Topers,
Denvsr and stveral other Important points. The comparison with two years sgo, how
ever, Is eminently favorable. Exchanges oa the Pacific Coast are sllshtly less than Ust
year, bnt a small gain over 1912. Some loss, as compared with both years appears at
San Franrisco, Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Oakland and San Joie. and at Los Angelts,
Portland, Sacramento, Oakland and Ban Diego as contrasted with a year age.

HOOS Owing to the heavy storm and
cold weather of thu last thirty-six hours
receipts this morning Wero very light
even for a Saturday, estimates colling
for fifty cars, or 3,600 head. For tho
weU the supply Amounts to something
like 63,912, being a shortage, of 6,600 head
as compared with lost week, and better
than 8,000 smaller than the corresponding
week a year ago.
Packers did not seem at all anxious to
start out this morning, and consequently
the .rado opened very slow, very few
bids being made until after 9 o'clock.
When buyers finally did start out their
offers wer barely steady, and as sellers
wera holding for an advance it was well
alont toward 10 o'clock before a trading
basis Was reached. In the end, however,
salesmen were forced to glvo In, and
the bulk of the supply moved at steady
figures. Movement Was draggy through
out and it Was well along in the fore
noo.i before tho light receipts .wero
cleaned up. ...
Bulk of tho offerings sold at $3. 25
8,60 and tops again landed at $3.65. For
tha week prices show a net advance of
fully 10c. During the first half of the
week the market was in very unsatisfac
tory shape, but starting with a strong
close Wednesday a reaction set In, and
on Thursday enough Avon put onto values
to cover nil tho -early decline. Another
stroig trade on Friday placed values at
a point that .looked to bo a big dime
higher thnn the close ot last week. Thsro
wero hardly enough hogs here today to
make a good market, ond the week closes
with a alow, steady trade. Light hogs
probably havo shown more gain than
ths htavlcs, as At the closo of last week
they wero soiling well below tho range
of .he heavier stuff, but under the In
fluence of a fair demand they have moved
up until good even kinds, not too light
are tilling fully as well, and In many
caa s better, than the rougher grades
carrying more weight. It might be men
tioned that Values are now at the highest
point that they have-reached so for this
year, and this week top of $8.65 Is the
best price that has been paid since lost
October, when tops reached tho same
