16 TI1K BEE: OMAHA, fcATTRDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1914. EGGS AND BUTTER GO DOWN Both Products Take Slide to lower Market Valuation. OTHER STAPLES ABOUT SAME Oroccrlm nml VrRrtnblcs 'Kxperl rnce No Xotlcrnlitr Ptnrfnntlon .nml I.lkrlr to Hold Their Mrn Until Spring. While several thousand housewives and oth- r Inhabitants of Omaha Interested In tho high cost of living grinned with glee, the price of butter and eggs took another elide down the price chute. If they continued to take thu toboggon trip It took as If those two staple articles will soon enter Into the field of popular price. Butter now sells retail for 90 cent, and unices there Is a radical chango in existing conditions It will be pelting for 13 cents within ten days or two weeks. Kggs took n bit bigger Jump than butter. The barnyard product is now selling nt H rents a dozen, which Is G cents less than the price a week ago. ICggs will also crntlnuo to drop. The open season Is responsible In a large . way for tho reductions In price. The storage men had secured largo ship ments of butter and eggs prcparatpry to an rra of high price, but the milder weather has forced the price down and tho vrbrage men have a large supply of butter and eggs on hand at the present tunc.' Tli Ik must be discharged as quickly. as pb'ftlblc and even tight weather wilt not ciuse the price to fluctuate upward. The. foreign butter has been a, large Influence In reducing the prlco of butter. Thd shipments from Australia, Now Zea land and Denmark arc arriving in this country every day and commission flrtin even ns far Inland as this city have re ceived shipments. As a result the prlco has .dropped. All other articles remain about the same In prii-o. Flour, sugar, coffee, meats, fruits, vegetables, all are about tin eamo and are expected to remain that way. ( Al King, manager of Hoyden's grocery department, predicts that prices will re main about tho- name the remalndir of tho winter, .except In -tho, cako of Witter and eggs, which always fluctuate from time, to time. He believes that both eggs and butter will bo selling at 23 cents within a relatively short time, but whether they will stay at that acceptable price Is a question which connol be an swered at tho prosent. Kugel Plans to Give the Social Service Board More Power Enforcement of the law prohibiting (Pitting on sidewalks and In public places will be secured through the pas sage of an ordinance augmenting the powers of the social scrvlco board. , 'Police Commissioner A. C Kugel, fol lowing a conference with the board mem bers, gave his sanction to such an ordi nance and Chairman' T. F. SlAirgcss of the board wilt Uraft It. Tho social service board complains that It Is unablo to enforce laws and has complained particularly of the spitting habit In theaters, nubile bullrings and on Sidewalks. ' ' An ordlnanco greatly Increasing thq power of the unsalaried social service board will bo submitted to the city com mission for passage as' soon as It can be d faffed. Chairman Sturgess of- the board said! vo need more power. Thus far we have been able to accomplish very little, our chief trouble, wo find, being In the fart that wo do not have sufficient power to compel o1edfnce." Wind Twists Heavy Gangway Around As a result of the high wjnd the frame gangway erected In front of the new building of the Omaha Printing company. Thirteenth and Farnam streets, was iwlstnd around about 8:3) o'clock Friday Morning, so that street cars were block aded and passengers had to walk the rest bf their way or else take1 different cars. SVhen the heavy structure was wrested from Its place It narrowly missed several pcoplo who 'had their heads lowered on account of the void. With tho aid of a wrecking crew, the street was cleared VI ml traffic was again resumed. BIG STOCK LOSS . UNLIKELY General Manager Holdrege Thinks Storm Will Not Affect Ranchers. WHEAT FIELDS ABE BENEFITED Snorr Cnrrr Jotl Portion of West ern rVcbrnmUn nml CiroiTliiic ftrnln Is Ileitis; Pro-tecteit. Clcntal Manager Holdregr of the Uur llngton came Irijfrom the west this morn ing ani states that the storm has been general ail the way from Denver to Omahn. with below zero temperatures nil nlon? the line. Mr. Holdrege Is of the opinion that tho snow will bo of great enefU to the winter 'Avhcat and thai when It melts tho moisture will leave the ground In perfect condition. "The fall of snow has not been heavy," said Mr Holdrege, "and considerable of It has been blown away, but In the wheat field the, grain reached a hcltfht of three to four Inches lastr fall. It Is very thick on the ground, and all .the snow that blows In among the blades will remain This means that every wheat field Is covered with ft blanket of snow as deep as the wheat Is high. H Is going to re main there and when It melts every drop of moisture will soils lata the ground." lle!al've to some tall: that stock losses on the range will bo considerable on ac count of the storm and tho cold, Mr Hol drege asserted that there Is nothing to such ri'mors, adding: Winter tins lleen 3IM1. "Tho winter has been so mild that cat tle, nd In fact all animals, both on the rnngo and In the pastures and lots are In tho .best of condition. They are well prepared to stand bad weather In the event It should contlnuo a long time. Then, too, this year there Is plenty of coarso feed, and up to this time little i of It hna been used. Should the weather continue cold and should the snow become deep this feed will be given to the ani mals, and there Is no possibility of their going hungry. Handlers and stockmen gencta'ly havo provided shelter, so that during the bad weather the cattle and other animals on the range and In tho i big pastures are given practically the I same care as those on the smaller farms ' In th- eastern part of tho state and over In !.otta. My Judgment is that tt evn bad roather should continue losses would not t worth mentioning. There was never a winter before when stockmen were well prepared for caring for ani mals as now." General Manager WafTeYs pt the North western says that no matter what the weather may be there will be little Mock loss b'ong the company lines In Nebraska. South Dakota and Wyoming. He adds. "All along our lines, tho cattle and sheep men prepared for a hard winter. Since tho experience of several winters ago they" do this now every fall. Now they rut up plenty of hay and conserve their winter ranee. This having been done, there Ib no possibility of tho losses reachlr.g the minimum of most of tho former winters." 1 Persistent Advertising Is the Road to Clg Returns.
