OMAHA. Feb. 2. 1911.
There lt Utile ftnllht In Inn minds nf
those who have watched conditions m
wheat ns to the control of the bears In
uiai market, it would be dllficutl to say
as to the level wtioro exporters are likely
io Decomo tniyera again in a iiDctai way
and any heavy buylnif will. Ot course,
stimulate the situation greatly and cause
at least a partial reversal ot conditions.
There Is little likelihood of any crop
(Jamago commit tn as a bull help, cspe
ciauy in tho near future, M the country
U pretty well covered with snow and
thOfrlant well protected from any pos
sible cold snapg, which otherwise would
do mora or leee damage. We have, oniy
started Into February, however, and there
la a possibility of enough sunshine to
greatly reduce tho snow covering, and. If
followed by abnormally low tempera
tures tho speculative world knows this
would meat) crop lasses and higher prices.
There Is no speculation in wheat to
Bpralt of, especially on outside account,
and this fact will continue against thu
bears until such time as the public enters
the market. The outsider, however,
seldom takes a hand In speculation as a
bear, because of the tact that there Is
so little enthusiasm In a boar market and
the declines aio generally brought up
with u iiuick halt, and those who were
most enthusiastic! as tellers are generally
mado to suffer losses ivml to regret their
tctlon.
Tho statistics this mornlns ore more
or less bullish, but tho changes in tho
routine statistics aro quite mliu and un
likely to cut any figure In the way of
prlco making.
Corn has hold up well. The reason for
the steadiness has been largely on ac
count of shorts covering, somo of them to
Beau re profits, whllu others have been
forced to take losses, , The longs In corn
are watting for a cash demand to spring
up, and until that demand comes they
wll bo on tho anxious bench and feel
that they are likely to meet losses, when
a big market like Chicago sella less than
IW.WO bushels cash corn In a day, and
on several occasions of lat total sales
amounting to only 60,000 bushels, it may
be said that the cash situation Is agalpst
holders.
When It comes to the matter of epecm
latlon the corn market has been the
leader for several weeks with wheat play
ing a second fiddle. Home of the room
traders in this grain who made, big money
on the full aide of the inarkot some
months ago, are to be seen on the. bull
sdo, with good holdings tucked away
for the spring months, as they expect to
eee higher prices when the farm work Is
commenced and tho cash demand likely
to Improve.
BtockB of oats are largo in all positions,
the volume of tradq In the pit has contin
ued small and the cash trailo ot little
consequence. The market has been in
fluenced more or less by the changes tn
corn. ,
There has been plenty of provisions for
sale on not only the hard spots, put
spine have followed the declines. There
arc stl big holdings of ribs and lard by
tho east. It takes constant support to
hold the market steady,

Throughout tho day wheat had a firm
tone, besides the chance of serious dam
age to the Nebraska winter crop there
was decided bullish news from Australia,
a sharp cut In the estimated surplus
yield. Palling off of country elevator
stocks throughout the Dakota and Min
nesota furnished supplementary strength
during the last hour, emphasising the
effect ot a decrease in the weekly total
of tho United States visible supply.
Prospects of a broader milling demand
for wheat were reported from Minneapo
lis, where It was said that shipping di
rections for flour had. been excellent
throughout tho week. According to one
authority the way the stocks had been
cleaned up left no doubt thut the people
were still eating bread, cake and pie,
Profit-taking by Ipnge wiped out an
advance which corn had made as a re
mit of expected rough weather. Un
usually wariness was shown by specu
lators, no matter to which side of the
marvei iney were inclined. The open
Interest In the pit Is not nearly as larse
a a fortnight ago. Action by the oats
crowd seemed to hinge altogether on
:orn. Trade waa light.
