Benson, who was recently appointed a warrant officer In the navy by President Wilson, was jjresented with an elaborately engraved gold mounted sword by the officers and men at tho navy recruiting station here yesterday afternoon. Enlisting In the navy In 1901 at tho sta tion In Omaha, Edward L. Benson found that life In tho navy orrered opportuni ties to young men. even though they were compelled to start as apprentice seamen.' Following his graduation from the high school here, he continued to ap ply hlnuelf diligently to his studies. In 190$ Mr. Benson was sent to the re. crultlng station here, and ho served ati a member of the recruiting staff until 1910, when ho returned to the active service aboard ship. Three times was ho honorably dis charged, and each time ho entered th- service by rc-en!lstlng. It was during his fourth enlistment, which started lust year, that he was again assigned to duty at tho Omaha naval recruiting station with the rank of chief quartermaster. On January 17 he took the oath of of. flee following his appointment to the of fice of warrant officer, with the title of boatswain. Hln appointment to this rank takes him out of the line of enlisted men, making his position permanent during tho remainder of his llfo.
