CHICAGO, Jan. 31 Ample protection
and moisture given by snow falls today
In the winter crop territory left the wheat
bulls at a disadvantage. The market,
although steady at tho close, was HGWc
under last night. Corn wound up with a
gain ot-Hc to He. oats a shade to He,
and provisions ranging from 2Hc off to
a rise .of 32Hc '
According to experts, the snow which
descended over tho greater part of tho
winter wheat region furnished exactly
what was needed to make the growth
condition all that could be desired. The
Immediate result was to send a majority
of speculators to the selling side, and
to enlargo the country offerings ot hard
winter grades, especially from the south
west and from Nebraska. Meanwhile,
the shipping demand hero was slow and
export bids at 'the seaboard were out of
line.. ,
Resting commission orders which re
newed buying at a moderate decline
seemed' to ho based on signs of a heavy
reduction In stocks having taken placu
this, week. On the other hand, arrivals
are expected ,to Increase again in tho next
few days. . '
Corn during most ot the day had an
upward, slant. It was pointed out that
receipts here of the week were' the small
est for' any corresponding time In five
years. 'Besides, the rough weather was
said to be likely to Interfere with shell
ing and hauling,, and to. Increase the de
mand for feed.. Oats hardened in sym
pathy with corn; trading, however. Was
at a minimum.
Congestion developed In January pork
and .brought about a squeeze for dealer
who were shore of that delivery. In the
rest ot the provision list, holders rraliied
freely, availing themselves ot the 'chance
afforded by nn- upturn In tho price 'of
hogs.

CATTLE There were no cattle In sight
this morning of any consequence, but the
receipts for the week have been very
liberal, showing a considerable gain over
a year ago.
Beet steers at the beginning of the
week wcro stronger, but commencing
with Tuesday tho market eased oft quite
rapidly and at the close of tho week
prices are 1525c lower. The decline has
been the most severe on the, medium
grades, but even good cattle aro lower.
The slump has been due apparently to
unseasonable weather prevailing during
the greater part of the time at eastern
polpts, which has reduced the demand
for meat production of all kinds. At the
same time the liberal receipts have given
packers an opportunity to bear the mar
ket. The report of three boatloads of
Argentina beef on the way to New York
may have contributed somewhat to the
weakness.
Cows and heifers were in liberal re
ceipt and as prices at this point were
very heavy to begin with, the market
steadily docllncd, closing around 2Sc
lower than last week.
Stock cattle and feeders were In light
supply all week and as there was a rea
sonably uood demand prices were strong,
being' If anything a little higher than last
week's close.

SHEEP Nothing In the way of sheep
and lambs- arrived at the yards this
morning, which is often the case on the
last day of the week.
An excessive supply of sheep and lambs
during the week and unseasonably warm!
weather generally were the reasons for
a big slump In values. The receipts for
the week amount to some 56,116 head,
compared with 52,310 last week and 30,6X3
for the same week a year ago. Other
markets were also liberally supplied, re
sulting In a substantial prtco derllne at
all points. On the whole, the offerings
here were much the same as last week,
with a fairly large percentage of warmed
up grades ot both sheep and lambs still
showing up In the receipts.

NEW YORK STOCK MARKET
Higher Prices Quoted in Nearly

BUYING PROCEEDS WITH VIGOR
Almost Unprecedented Flow of
Money This Month Is Well
Malntnlncd Dtirlnfc tho
Month.
NEW YORK, Jan. 31.-Hlgher prices
were nuntrd In almost every cose In the
early trading today. Buying proceeded
wun unimpaired vigor ana tno nse ul
vesterdav was extended sufficiently to
establish top figures In many cases for
the advance which began last month.
Another upturn In the London market.
togetaer with buying nero tor iorcign
account, Influenced the movement. Tho
market failed, however, to maintain Its
Improvement. A reaction set In which
fdrced prices below yesterday's close. In
tho last half hour Uie trend was again
revoraed. Quotations rallied strongly
at tho closo changes wero irregular with
a preponderance of gains.
Weakness of the Rock Island securities
held back the market. News of a prob
able reorganization of the Rock Island
company and a possible friendly re
ceivership caused tho common stock to
drop 2 to 12H. the preferred 3i to lSVi
and the collateral Is ITs to 43. These
losses were cut down on the late upward
swing. The Hill stocks were In espe
cially good demand and made sub
stantial gains. Low-priced s pedal tlefl
also reflected free buying.
The almost unprecedent Inflow ot
money this month was well maintained
during the week, the bank statement
showing a cash gain In the actual table
of $9,400,000. This brought up the total
gain by New York banks In January to
$76,600,000. There was a further Increase
In loans, amounting to $23,000,000 and only
a' small addition to surplus was made.
.In tho bond market there was an
active Inquiry, reflecting continuance ot
Investment buying. New York state 414a
reached a now high price at 10SH. The
general bond market was firm, being lit
tle affected by the weakness of Rock
stand Issues. Total sales, par value,
$2,900,000. Panama 3s, registered, ad
vanced on call on tho week.
