The wheat market was under more or
less pressure during mut of yesterday's
easlon and prices were ?WiHo lower for
the day. Conslderablu wheat was put Into
the pit by brokers representing the
larger interests In the market and this
wheat was mostly part or an accumu
lation that has been carried Cor some
time. In addition to Jhls thbre were sales
of 00.000 bu. Jong wheat that was be
lieved to have been owned by James
Rankin, one of the big professionals.
The news on corn was mainly bearish,
yet prices showed no great weakness.
McKenna & Rodgera received a messngo
from New York saying that thero were
sales there yesterday of Argentine corn
for February shipment at f7c, c. J. f.,
New York, while the last 6alo was at
Hc.
Oats were steady throughout the day,
at times showing some strength, notwith
standing the lack of speculative trade
and new buying power.
Brokers acting for packers were under
me mantel yesterday sustaining prices
on all weak spots. These people ncemcd
to want ribs, while lard was evidently
on sale, presumably from tho same
source.
A bearish circular on corn haa been
sent out by Flnley Barren, rcvlowbig tho
situation from all quarters, and espe
cially from tho free corn basts. They
bay:

and the Argentine and Canadian oat crops
will have great bearing on the future
trend of values In our markets. "We aro
facing the fact that our priced in this
country are subject to world-wide condi
tions, as they never were before in the

ably marked the passing of corn and
oats In the United States from a domestic
to an international basts. Long standing
facts and theories may tie abandoned by
tho trade and new ones substituted. Fac
ing these conditions and applying the
limited experience gained rrom the pres
ent Invasion of our markets ,by foreign
grain, we can venture to Judge, with some
degree of certainty what effect tho change
will have on future values.

Surprise over unexpected strength at
Liverpool gave the wheat market here
a tendency at first to bulge. After
shorts hud covered, however, the buying
flurry ceased, and traders took more
notice of domestic advices, particularly
tho Ohio state report which estimated
the Condition of winter ttrhent tn hn 1(11
against 90 a year ago. Radical depres
sion in tno value of winter grades at
Toledo was regarded as significant, and
was COUPled with news from irnnum:
City that red -winter premiums that were
laaing away on nccount ot nearly half
the receipts being of that grade.
Smallni-Bs of arrivals northwest acted
as a check on the wheat bears. Bliz-
zuray weamer in mat direction was ex
pected to ruduce further the amount of
ireon supplies.
In the corn crowd, belief that colder
weather, although tending to increase
the demand for feed, would noon start
sellers again to work, led to heavy
eclllng. The theory was that country
roads which are now In generally bad
condition would be Improved by a freeze.

NEW YORK. Jan. 20.-Presldent Wil
son's recommendations to congress re
garding untltnist legislation were of lit
tle effect on the stock market. For sev
eral days previously speculation was cur
tailed and traders marked time pending
publication of the message. It was as
sumed that the message would have an
important part In shaping speculative
sentiment, but the action ot the- market
was disappointing to those who looked
for Immediate response. After the mes
sage appeared tho market moved In the
same Irregular way as during the pre
vious portion or me session, closing
with small gains for representative
stocks.
The nnathetlo attitude of the market
probably was duo to the fact that the
message contained no Importnnt feature
for which tho street was not prepared.
Advices from Washington since the pres
ident's return from the south Indicated
the position he was expected to take and
It was these Indications which wore pri
marily responsible for last week's art
vancA in the market The message
closely paralleled forecasts and traders
found In it no new features which they
could seise upon as a basts for opera
tions. It was thought that later, when
sufficient time had elapsed for more
careful study of tho message and crystal
lisation of sentiment the eifect might be
more pronounced.
At the outset tho market was slightly
lower, but movements wero unusually
narrow throughout the early session.
Following publication of the president's
message prices rose, but when It becamo
apparent that 'little progress could be
made in that direction traders sold tho
market on the theory that the effect of
the message had been discounted. Prices
were sent down to the low level of the
day, but In the last hour they wero bid
UP strongly.
Reading again reflected persistent
realizing such aa has been In progress
for several days. Canadian Paciria was
affected by European selling and for a
tlmo showed a loss pt more than 2 points.
Petroleum shares, particularly Mexican,
were strong.
Bonds were firm. Government, munic
ipal and somo second and third grade
mortgages wero conspicuously strong.
Total sales, par value, 3,250.000.
Panama 3s, registered, advanced 3 on
call.

HOOK A very fair run showed up this
morning, but advices from other points
were a little stronger, and as there seemed
to be a strong local demand, the market
opened with all buyers taking good heavy
and butcher hogs at prices that were
quoted as 5O10c higher. As was tho case
on Monday, the commoner grades, espe
cially of the light weight stuff, woro very
much neglected during the early rounds,
and It was not until the majority ot the
hogs had been sold that buyers began to
take much notice ot them. As a good
share of the ordors had been filled by
this time, the demand was not nearly so
earger, and prices offered for the mixed
light hogs were In no case more than a
nickel higher, and In many Instances lit
tle better than steady. As a result of this
weakening of the market the late trade
was very dull, and while the early move
ment was fairly active, the forenoon was
weli advanced before anything like a
clearance was made.
Towards tho extreme cloio the market
became very weak, and In many cases
the packers een refwed 10 bid on tho
IlKht welRht stuff, while such bids na
tlu.y did make were, If anything, weaker
than yesterday. Under these conditions
a number of salosrricn refused to cash
their offerings, and at noon thcrp were
stivcral loads still In first minds, rack
ets ar demonstrating every day that
