THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, JANUARY 17, 3914. 1U GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Trend of Wheat Values is Uncertain for a While. CORN IS QUITE STUBBORN Yellow Cerent Assumes Sen Attl tmle Trllh .More Knvornhle Fit Neira to the Hull Side of the Market. OMAHA. Jan. 16, 1914. Tho average wheat trader win at ca yesterday and the trend of values was quite uncertain. There was little on which to buy grain under present con ditions, while, on the other hand, there was little on which to sell It. Price changes were narrow. According to the cash handlers of wheat av Chicago, the offerings from Nebraska were larger, and this wns the case especially from the Omaha territory. The change to milder weather was an overbalancing fcaturo In o far as the unprotected condition of the wheat plant Is concerned at the moment. There was little talk of freezing and thawing yes terday, and nothing short of a crop scare win cause any activity or strength, Tne bulls and longs In wheat were content to allow the market to take caro of Itself yctserday, and their action caused many to put, out short lines who otherwise would probably have taken on some wheat. If history repeats Itself, nnd It Is likely to do so In this particular case, those who sold wheat yesterday may be driven to cover toeforo anotner day s ses alon Is at nn eild. The market was a one-sided affair (when It wa declining yesterday), but on the advance toward the closo tho buying was scattered and three were more bulls than bears. The outsider Is badly needed in the wheat market at Chicago In order to stir things up. Thero wns only a sprinkling of out side trade yesterday and that came mostly frm tho southwest and tho northwest Tho weakness In the spring wheat markets waa partially the result of heavy selling on Chicago speculative account, together with the lack of power to absorb tho grain thrown overboard. Corn showed some stubbornness yester day, although tho buying side of the market was estimated to absorb an enormous quantity of orders to prevent values from selling off sharply. There was more In the news favorable to tho bulls than to the bears. Iowa and Illi nois were consigning corn and there was not a sale of that grain over night at Chicago. The shorts In corn haVe covered freely during tho last-Jew days, and this left the mtfrket without Its principal sup port. There was a disposition on the part of the professionals In hog products to take profits when available and there, also wao rather liberal' sales of lord by packers. This pressuro brought about declines all around. Several of the big wire houses were buyers. Longs were reinstating their lnes toward the close and this buying closed the market steady. Cash wheat was unchanged. Cash corn was unchangod to lc lower. There was no Bale of oats. Clearances: Wheat and flour equal to (6,000 bushels: corn, 7,000 bushels; oats, 14,000 bushels. Australia!! shipments of Wheat proved a decided surprise, amounting to more than double those of a year ago. The lesult was to weaken quotations Immedi ately In Liverpool, and from the outset to havo an effect on prices here. Argen tine reports of fino weather promoting tho crop movement to the seaboard counted also In favor of the bears. Unusually warm weather throughout the winter crop belt tended to prevent any important ruuy in tne wncat marRoi. although It wns admitted that the lack of snow protection formed a menace In the event of a sudden chance of tem perature. Tho depression In prices led to f-omo export buying, but tho fact was not Kenerally known until after the market hntlrlnaitri. Scnntlness of feeding demand owing to summor-llke conditions had a bearisn in fluence on corn. Heavy shipments from Argentina emphasized the weakness, and there wero signs that receipts nt Chicago votuci be enlarged, sellers couia mm only limited support for oats. Even ut a liberal decline, the buying was small. Provisions eased oft with boss and grain. Traders virtually ignored bullish figures regarding warehouse stocks on rand.
