THE 1U0K: OMAHA, FRIDAY, .JANUARY 1(5, 1914. IT GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Bears in Wheat, Corn and Oats Are Put to Rout. MAY OPTION IS TIED UP TIGHT Pntnre Whrnt for Thnt Month nnd the Cnsh Article Are Being; Held by the 111k Holders In Ihlcnfto. OMAHA. Jan. 15. 1914. The bears In wheat, cofn and oata were routed jesterday and made to see for the moment that they were on the x.ront; aide of the market. Even John Uarrett, who was the bear leader for month and month, wag reporting sales of cash wheat at Kansas CUy fgr foreign ship ment. This old-time bear was -ilso talk ing quite bullish on the general situation and tTiere was an army of professionals traveling In hla foot-steps. The averago wheat trader has made up tils mind, after so long a time, that mora hard winter wheat Is being sold for shipment olioad than the speculative world Is awaro of. These same people have also made l.p their minds that this particular stock of grain has dwindled down to abnormally small proportions In the Chicago market, and they now look upon tho short Bide as rather hazardous tinder vresent condi tions. The matter of advertising the big holder of May and cash wheat nt Chicago would be of no benefit to thoe who are short the May future, and It Ss enoutth to say that that month is tied up tightly and that there Is no likelihood of the bears getting out without receiving a rap across the speculative knuckles. The situation in wheat may be callsd abnormal. Whllo the stocks here are not large, tho umount In the visible supply Is nbove the average and In some of the larger markctB the amount of wheat now being carried Is of good size. Those who are speculating In this grain and who havo adhered to the bull side for a long time fall to consider on very Important factor, and that is that never In the history of the Chicago Hoard of Trade has the weather been as favorable for moving wheat after It was harvested and threshed ns during 1913. Up to the present time In 1914 tho weather In tho country where tho wheat was held was favorable for threshing and hauling to tho railroad stations. Advances were shown of lUfflHc In corn and the trade was of enormous pro portions, with the shorts eagerly cover- ering, and many of tho longs Belting in order to secure profits. The shorts were uneasy because of the delay In removal of hedges by one of tho larger specula tors, who sold quite a quantity, of tho cash article In the last few wooks. Kan sas City reported a slack demand there on feeding account, with Iowa, offering corn freely. Oats followed corn and closed with gains of 94c. The cash market was a little higher at Chicago and Kansas City. The more conservative men in the trade declared they were unable to see any prospcts for a bull market with the liberal stocks in Chicago warehouses, as well as in the vlslblo supply. Provisions were strong and closed higher. The lighter hog movement was one of tho bull helps ana the strength shown by corn was another. The buy. Ing was led by private wire concerns. Patrick Cudahy of Milwaukee was cred ited with liberal sales of May pork, and ribs. Cash wheat was unchanged to Mc hig.ler. Cash oats were Vic lower to Mo higher. Clearances: Wheat and flour equal to 653.000 bushels; corn. 4.000 bushels: oats, 4,000 bushels. Liverpool close: Unchanged to Md higher; corn, V4d higher. Primary wheat receipts were 009,000 hiatticls and shipments 371,000 bushels, against receipts of 1,081.000 bushels and shipments of 490.000 bushels last year. Primary corn receipts were 824,000 bushels and shipments 102.000 bushels. against receipts of 1,135,000 bushels and shibments of 1.1G6.000 bushels last year. CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS Features of the Trailing; anil Closlngr Prices on Hoard of Trade. CHICAGO, Jan. 16. Although wheat un derwent some reaction today after the rapid advance in the preceding Besslon, thcro was considerable fresh buying due to belief that much of the Australian crop would bo required by Japan. The market closed nervous, ranging from Ifec decline to 4'4o advance, compared with tho night before. Com finished Wo off to Vic up, oats down 'Mr'.ic. and pro visions varying from 2ii loss to a igaln of 12o. Notice of Increased demand for Australian cargoes formed one of the earliest Items that engaged the attention of tho wheat trade. Later, the subject was again Drougnt torwara Dy estimates that tho Australian surplus would be nearly 2,000,000 bushels less than the total a year ago. It was not until near the end of the day, however, that buyers here learned of a more decisive Impetus to action news from an authoritative source that Japan was making ex ten live Inquiries In Australia and was likely to purchase heavily because or dlsap pointing yields at home. Liberal export sales at St. Louis and elsewhere helped the wheat market to rally late Iri the session. Reduced esti mates of the Argentine yield counted also as an element of strength. It was a fact, nevertheless, that during most of the day, prices were Inclined to uag, the sudden forcing out or snorts yesterday having deprived tha market of an lm Dortant share of support. General loosening un In offerings from the country brought about a return of bear pressure on corn. Unseasonably mild weather that was expected to con tlnue for several day added to the weak ness, and so too did a lack of adequate shinning call. On the other hand, thn liull turn in wheat aided a rally toward the last. For the most part, oata merely followed the course of other grain. The Buenos Ay res market was reported to be excited and higher, because of disap pointing returns. Increases in the monthly statement of warehouse -stocks led to a weakening of tho provision list,. after a firm start. The upward tendency at tho outsot cama from higher prices for hogs. Heaboard A. The govern ment's right under the puro food law of 1908 to censor circulars enclosed In paca ages ot medicine on tho market is to be passed upon by the supreme court. Department of Agriculture officials claim the public I being deceived every day by exaggerated statements of the efficiency of nostrums to effect all klnda ot marvelous cures. They claim that tho pure fpod la4v was enacted to wlpo out this evil. Manufacturers of medicines, however. contend that tho pure food law merely au thorises government officials to regulate statements on tho labels of medicines, and did not confer any authority over circulars enclosed In packages. The dlsputo botween the government and tho manufacturers came to a sharp Issue in Omaha recently, when the gov ernment seized thirteen cases ot patent medlclno shipped by a Philadelphia firm. Each package contained the statement on on enclosed circular that "we know It linn cured and that It will cure tubercu losis," and a further statement that It "will serve as a preventive of pneu monia." Tho federal district court of Nebraska held that tho modlclne 4Vas inlsbranded under tho puro food latv. The manufac turer has appealod to tho supremo court on tho ground tho pure food law deal. 4vlth labels and not circulars, and fur- thcrmoro that the la4V as Interpreted by tho Nebraska court 1. unconstitutional Insofar as tho court held that the law sought to glvo tho government a right to pass en opinions as to the curative quali ties ot tho medicines.
