H.-(Spcclnl.)-The question whether the state of Nebraska should pay one of Its employes, who finding himself Or herself deficient In the qualifications necessary -to hold tho job, a salary while that employe Is quali fying himself or herself came up this forenoon beforo the meeting of tho State Normal board, and becauso of the strong fight made by State Treasurer George, was laid over until the next .meeting. The controversy came up over tho habit of tho board of paying a month's salary to teachers In the state normal who se cure leave of absence In order to tako additional training In somo school which will better prepare them for the por.ltlon they hold. Mr. George vigorously op poted tho plan, claiming that the teachers ought not to be given any greater rights than any other employe of the state, llo thought that If a teacher found that In older rucccrsfully to carry on the work, It, was necessary to equip herself better, she should do so at her own expense, the same as a physician, attorney, clerk, or nny other man in professional lire. Ho pat on the board for severnl years, but never became "sur prised" before until he discovered that tho report from tho Kearney normal while under tho charge of President Thomas, whom he had voted to dismiss ! without a hearing, had not been checked up. Contracts for the erection of tho new building at the Wayno normal, and also for the erection of a twelve-room ad dition to the Chadron normal, were let by the board last night. . P. Riddel of Crelghton scoured tho contract for, the new building at Wayno for $76,630. The contract for the addition to tho Chadron school was let to F. E. Mulholland of .Rapid City, S. D., for $24,533.
