Dec 29, 1913. d-3QtoJ20 Eastern Magazine Plays Up Work of Robert Weidensal "Uncle Robert Weldcneall, the beloved founder of rural association work In this country," is the way his portrait Is labeled In an article on "The Rural Life Engineer and His Work" In the current American Review of Reviews, and thero Is no difficulty for Omaha readers to recognize tho portrait ot their former fellow townsmen, still a frequent visitor here. Referring to him further, the nrtlclo says: More than forty years ago Mr. Robert Weldensall, tho pioneer of rural associa tion work in America, had foreseen, with the vision of a true prophet the present results of the then rising tide of the country exodus to the cities. To begin the stemming ot this tide, he organized in Du Page township. Will county, Illinois, the first rural Young Men's Christian association. Then, for yease on the plat form and with his pen, ho labored to convince tho association of the need ot saving the country from the city. For a long time Mr. Weldensall was simply laughed at. But the Young Men's Chris tian association Is, in Its purpose, first of all a religious organization, and it finally dawned upon Its leaders that the country churches wore fast losing out and that the religious organizations of the cities wero not capturing the tide pour ing In from the rural districts.
