directors lor relief, but the relief asked
was out of question, and tho holders of
that grain on track will be obliged to
meet the losses. The winter wheat crop !
Is In most excellent condition nnd advices '
from some of tho southwestern states say
that tho present snow covering w.ll fur
nish ample moisture for tho growing plant
lip to a period next spring that will earn
It through with only light rains. This
Is the case especially In Kansas, whero
the acreage Is larger than ever before,
and where farmers bcl.ove their efforts
will be fully repaid.
Chicago is In need of additional specu
lation In wheat, and It Is also In need of
an Improved cash demand. Theso changes
are essential for the salvation of the
buns, aa In the absence of trade on out
side account, as well as In tho absence
of a cash business, the bears will experi
ence but little difficulty In retaining full
hold upon the market.
Argentina Is again pressing Its wheat
on the Importing countries of the world.
Russia Is offering wheat more freely,
Australia will have an additional amount
of grain for export, but the India offer
ings are still In the balance.
When the bulls and bears In wheat are
scanned on the local1 exchange It Is a
noticeable fact that the stronger con
cerns favor the bull side. They seem
to bo ablo to handle tho market without
much trouble.
James A, Patten, the old-time handler
of coarse grains, took In and paid for
something like 6,000,000 bushels of corn
on contract laBt month, and unless a de
mand springs up for this grain It prob
ably will be shipped east and held for
merchandising purposes.
The oats market has been handicapped
no little by the Canadian oats, which
have been brought Into this country nnd
it was believed for a time that prices
would sell to a much lower level. Values
have declined, but there has been no
great amount of pressure.
There Is a good Blzed open Interest In
hog products at the moment, yet this
has been greatly reduced by liquidation
by some of tho larger longs and the put
ting out of short lines by others. The
run of hogs has been larger than expo-ted
and the average holder of pork, lard and
ribs is now at sea as to when these re
ceipts are to show a falling off.

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Feaiurra of the Trndlntr nnd ClosInK
Prlom on IJonr.l nf Trade,
CHICAGO, Jan. 2. Comprehensive re
ports indicating the winter wheat crop
In almost perfect condition acted as a
weight today on the prlco of wheat and
offset an early advance due largely to
foreign buying here. The market closed
steady Mo off to UftUo up, compared
with Wednesday night. Corn and oats
both finished unchanged to He lower and
provisions at 2)io decline to a like ad
vance. W heat at the start rose sharply. In
fluenced by the fact that cable quota
tions were higher and that harvest re
turns in Argentina were poor. Bes des,
prospects were that recelnts northwest
of here would be much dimntshed owing
to com, stormy wcatner, Htrengtn, how
ever, began to give out before midday.
European purchasers not showing much
eagerness after the market had scored a
further advance.
Snow In Missouri favored a bearish re
action In wheat and there were advices
from virtually all parts of the winter
crop belt asserting that tho recent colder
temperatures had been gradually tough
ening the plant so that a severe freeze
might now be faced without much chance
of harm. Values descended accordingly
throughout the last hour and a half,
with only a slight rally as the final bell
cleared tho pit.
Adverse weather for the movement of
corn brought about a temporary stampede
of shorts. There also was a good deal
of speculative buying credited to a prom
inent meat packer. Eastern demand,
though, was limited, and primary ar
rivals heavy. As a result gains were not
held, and the market In the end was
noticeably weak.
Oats followed the same course as other
grain. Offerings on the swells were lib
eral and came for the most part from
dealers on the long side of corur
Provisions ruled quiet but firm. The
sustaining force appeared to be from
commission orders bared on the strength
of the market for hogs.
