OMAHA, Deo. 31, 1913.
A dlrnppolntlng cable caused a slightly
lower opening on wheat, but It Immo
ntulttly du!MPa that there wa a good
demand through commission houses and
the miukct hud a quick spurt This ad
Vance, however, was not maintained, the
ensuing reaction being attributed to a
declining tendency In corn. Nothing was
said about export business but tho north
west markets held very well and this
latter factor contributed some firm
ness to tho local market Various local
operntors were reported as sellng, but
tho market, notwithstanding, showed
otilta a little steadiness. There Is a
strong Undertone and It Is believed this
will cvcntuall) he reflected In a higher
level.
Corn started firm with considerable ex
citement In the December, owing to cov
ering by shorts. There was llkewlso some
snort covering In the May ruturo ny
those who had not been driven In by
yesterday's bulge. Tho weather may re
vealed nothing favoring the bulls and
this, with lower cables, finally affected
the price and tho market developed a
much easier tone. Helling on a large
scale by a houso Identified with the long
aide was reported, but tho offerings
were fairly well absorbed except In the
December, which gradually declined until
It was below last night. Naturally there
will have to bo some shrlnknge In tho
receipts nnd a better demand to give tho
market snap, but. It Is believed such con-
(i.tions aro not far off and therefore
traders favor the long side on reactions.
uais opened wrong, but tho pressure
of offerings by a large local concern
gradualy wore tho price down and caused
some liquidation by the longs. The mar
ket firmed slightly near the close. Trad
ers believe purchases aro advisable on
reactions such as today.
Provisions wero slightly lower. Offer
