Indians last evonlng at tho Young Men's
Christian association by the icore of 34
to 22. Though tlw Pirates seemed to
have a more aggressive team than the
Indians, Dellevue put up a plucky fight
and towards the last of tho contest moro
than outplayed their heavier opponent.
The game started with neither sldo'
making a basket for about five minutes,
but as tho first half progressed the Pi
rates started shooting; ' baskets from
dvery point of the field. Betlevu seemed
unable to guard the members ot the
Pirate team In the first half.
In the second half Bellovue played a'
mueh more aggressive sjame. The team
work was by far tho beat of any team
that has played the local gym this
rear. Time after time MB Indians

presented membors ot ths press with full
details of a possible ball game to be
played hers at ltourke park on Christ
mas day.
"It would be a good drawing card, even
if wo played In a snowstorm," said Haskell.
Haskell got the idea when he learned
that a number of major leaguo players
who live tn or near Omaha would be here
on Christmas day. He immediately sot
about forming a team, and when he did
so, ha Issued a challenge to Frank Qulg-
ley, dean of amateur spherists. Qulgley
Is challenged, begged, entreated and
coaxed to trot out a good team, amateur
Or semi-professional, to meet Haskell's
nine.
The big feature of the game Is that all
Of tha gate receipts, after expenses are
deducted, are to be turned over either to
Miss Mabel Porter of the Associated
Charities or to the City Mission, or
equally divided.
If Qulgley cart dig up a good team well
enough known about Omaha to rejuve
nate tho latent baseballltls germs In the
fans, there Is no doubt that charity will
get a big wad of green money on Christ
mas day as the result of the game, re
gardless of the weather.

celelor Shoe company closed down Its
plant here tonight, throwing 1,000 per
sons out ot .employment for an Indefinite
period. Officials of the company stated
the action was taken out ot sympathy
for the Selby Shoe company, which has
been troubled by a strike among Its
employes for the last two weeks Strike
leaders declare 1,900 employes ot the lat
ter company are on a strike demanding
that a few discharged employes be reinstated.

Hersog, former ball player iwlttr tho New
York and Boston National league dubs,
was chosen today as manager of tho
Cincinnati team for the season of 1914.
After a conference with the board of di
rectors and a second conference -with
President August Herrmann and Secretary
Harry Stephens, Herxog signed a con
tract as a player for a year and was then
officially mado manager.
Herzog steps Into the position made
vacant by tho snip of former Manager
Joo Tinker to the Brooklyn club, Ho will
play at shortstop, as did Tinker, and
guldo the team, on the field, Herxog
outlined his ideas of a winning 'team to
the board of directors and they were
approved.
Herzog said ho bellevod In a fast, dash
ing team, much on tho order of the New
York National league club, of which he
was a member before coming to Cin
cinnati, but added he had no trades or
tales In mind at present
Herzbg la 23 years old and was born in
'Baltimore. He Is a graduate of Maryland
university, and after a short minor league
experience was signed by Manager Mc
Graw for tho Now York team, with which
he played la 1908 and 1909. Ho -was traded
to the Boston National league 'team and
played with that club through the sea
son of 1910 and about bait of the season
of 1911, when he waa brought back to
New York by a deal mado for him by
McQraw.
Tho New York leader recently made a
trade with Cincinnati In which the New
York club gave nerzog and Catcher'
Hartley for Outfielder Bob Bescher.
