The talent In wheat were complaining
again, yesterday of the market being1
'pegged'' between certain level and 01
the bull Interest eecurlnn profits above
and below stipulated figures. They also
complain that It Is an .impossibility to
head off these people, as the' qwn enough
of the futures as well as the cash to bo
able to control the price from day to day.
4ii6 wheat market again .narrowed
down to disgustingly narrow limits, and
the. volume of business was confined al-
most wholly to the room traders. These
speculators are satisfied with following
the larger trailers In the advances and
declines, not being wilting to sel or buy
a lino and stand on It. These dull seasons
are seen from time to time, but they are
seldom as dull as at the present.
There Is little on which to bull wheat,
and while there la considerable on which
to bear It, there Is no one In the trade
with the nocessary backbone to pat out
a big short line. John Barrett was the
big bear for a time, but ho Is now In the
camp of the opposition, and, really, he
looks out nf tilnrrv his face nreeentlni a
woe-DCKonc appearance, unless mere is

a change, for the better this old time spec
ulator is more than likely to be seen
again leading the bears In wheat. He
has a following, not only In Chicago, but
In the smaller markets of the country,
because of the fact that when ho at

fashion and gets results.

wero big sales of wheat thero yesterday,
all rail to tho seaboard, and that the
purchases of foreigners during the last
two days Were on a largo scale.
Corn closed at the high point of the
day and surprised even Its friends by
reacting from tho early low levels. The
December delivery was the'' strongest
spot," but It was closely followed by the
Slay. Outside markets reported a bet
ter business In cash corn. One of the
surprises for the day was the message
read here by Shearson Harmlll. giving
the exportable surplus of corn In Argen
tine at 35O,WJO,00O bushels. A cargo of
Argentine corn was offered c. 1. f. the
eastern seaboard at 70c, JanUary shlp-
rnent, while tho last sale was nt 73c.
As In December cbrn, December oats
were strong, and It looked as if there
as,a lingering short Interest In that
future. Tho difference between Decem
ber and May narrowed somewhat yes
terday. While tho provision market averaged
higher yesterday because of smaller of
ferings and covering by shorts, In addl
tlon to this the volume of trade was
much larger. Many of the larger hold
ers, especially the grain men. liquidated
early in the" week and tho offerings were
'small yesterday,
Cash wheat was unchanged.

CATTLK The cattle run this morning
waa very slow, as com Dared with yester
day and day before, but tho total for tho
thiee daya this week foots up .13,987 head,
being the largest, of any similar period
since two wreka ago, and about the same
as for the corresponding period a yoar
ago.
At the same. .time that receipts worn so
light, there was a fair buying demand,
with the result that desirable beef steers
this morning were strong to lOo higher
than yesterday, Common and Inferior
grades did not show any material Im
provement, but as a rule were slow but
steady.
Desirable kind of cows and heifers
sold wltrnmore freedom than either yes
terday or 1 the daj before, and thy wern
generally quotable as strong to 10c higher.
Inferior kinds were slow sellers nnd no
better than yesterday. Somo salesmen
were complaining that canners, which
have been selling pretty well of lata, were
weak this morning.
Stockera and feeders did not show much
change. As notod before, the demand
from tho country has not been very brisk
during the last few days, and the trade
at this point has been rather dull, with
prices lower.

to the general market on fat sheep and
lambs this morning. The most activity
was Ir tho right choice offerings, which
sold on a basis fully steady to strong
with yesterday. As for several days back
packers continued to show considerable
discrimination against anything only half
finished or not Just suitable to them,
resulting In a slow trade on such grade a
at prices about steady or nearly so. In
some Instances buyers worn so particu
lar as to what they bought that thay
would not bid on some offerings as long
as better grades were available. Taking
the market as a whole, however, pretty
much ovorythlng was cleared up In fair
season, aa noted above. Prices on most
all kinds of killers are regarded as any
where from 35o to 00a lower than tho
close of tho previous week, tho toast de
cllno being on tho boat grades and the
most on the less desirable kinds, and
such offerings aro hard to dispose of at
that. It might be added that a feature
of today's trade was the fact that na
tive heavy offerings, or for that matter
anything overly heavy, was not much
tought lifter by buyors.
In addition to today's light receipt of
about 7,000 head were about a dosen
loads carried over from yesterday's trade.
Tho holdovers were largoly on the hall
fat ordor, which was good proof that
packers aro not wanting anything but
the well finished grades for the Christ
mas trade. . ...
