Traoy Said to Hove Made Tito MIIMou Dollar Out of the ''Come-Oni." Chrlitopher J. Tracy, known from the AtlanUc to the Pacific as the "King of fake wire-tappers," died In the Polyclinic hospital. New York, of dropsy. The body was taken to Toronto, Canada, for burial. Tracy came of a Kood family, but after obtaining an education ho decided to follow the path Of leaat reelatance lead ing to wealth. tHe conceived the fake trire-tapplns swindle, and, though ho l.ad many Imitators, he had no superior. He fraternlred with Doc Owen. 'Uis" Lawson. now In Auttralla; Jerome Mj- ICay. the Gondorl brothers and Ijury Summerfleld. It Is eald he made J2.000, 000 In hla time. The bl6Set of Tracy's swindles was carried out a little over ten years ago. John Fellr, a maker of musical Instru ments, liked to bet and was picked out as the prospective victim. One afternoon an affable stranger railed on Felix and Introduced himself as a man he had met In Lou I.udlom'a gambling house. Knowing Felix to bo Interested in roulette, the stranger thought he might llvten to a "sura thing" scheme la rasing. Felix listened. The stranger, who was Traoy, had, h- raid, a friend In the Western Union office who could get advance informa tion on races. All that was needed ai capital. Several well known brokers f were In on the scheme, but they needed tleir spare cash for betting. If Felix had a safe large enough to house 1,000,. 000 cash and a little money to start the ball rolling, both would soon be rich. Felix had the safe and 130,000, so he was taken to the office of tht brokers after the brokers had gone home for the (lay and was let In by a key Tracy had made. Here the trusting maker of in struments was Introduced to "John W. Qatea" and other celebrities. Next day he was piloted to a pretended l-ootroom, where Tracy -on several thou sand dollars In stage money.1 The bet. ting grew heavier and Felix becamo ner vous In the fear he would not be able to get his money down before the place went broke. Finally he got to the win dow and dumped $50,000 on one race. At best accounts the horse he bet on 1 running yet Felix fainted At the finish of tho race. When he came to be hurried to police headquarters, where he told his story, "Big" Lawson fled, but Traay and others Tho had been In the swindle were ar. tested months afterward. Following a long trial Traoy was convicted, but he topk hi cate to- tho court of appeals and won on the ground that Felix had been a party to an- attempt to awlndla poolroom owners. Only a small percentage of Tracy's victims "i.quealed' For the most part they were men from small cities who could not stand the notortuty and swal lowed their losses. One such was a resl. dont of Ohio, Tracy was Introduced to him as a real estate broker He said ha neoded 139.000 cash to pull off a big deal and was willing to double the money for the man who made the loan. Tracy offered to .put up, the Flatlron building as security and give his note besides. He took the ' Ohloan through the building, spoke familiarly to tho ele vator boys, showed the unoccupied offices and got the 130,000. Then he gave the victim a banquet with his own money and sent him home' to wait for the M0.0CO he expected in' ninety days. He Is waiting ,yet. Truoy, though 'taken Into, custody many times, and cenvlpted at least onre, never served time. There was. always soma loophole through which he could squeeze. I He lived high, was known In every lob ster palace in town and was something of a first nlghter. He dressed quietly and In excellent taste. Of course, he was a glib talker, New York World. An Old Controversy. An old controversy has been reopened by the erection In fit. Peter's church yard at Morrlstown, N. J., of a monument to Alfred Vail wl.loh credits him with being the Inventor nt tho dot and dash Morse code. The rector of the church has been appealed to, but says that he haa no au thority to interfere. The case for Morse'a Invention or ruther devising of the code has been generally accepted as sound, and It is not a matter which merits great ar gument; in comparison with putting elec tric telegraphy upon a practical basis the vrrklnK out of a particular code of alphal 1-etlo signals was a matter of detail. It rot remarkably original, however, thi code was a good piece or work, as has been shown by Its general adoption ana, long use. Springfield ftecublican. Three or u 'Kind. Two Irishmen had to start work at 5 o'clock In tho morning. .During the night, however, their clock stoppW,' and, getting up very early next morning, they started for their work, "We needn't go now." said Pat, "for there's the sun up." "That's not the sun." said illck. "U'a the moon." Just then they met a tramp comlntr along the road. "It you plate," said Pat.
