over the Field club crowd, who were en

were act back a notch by the National

A meotlng of tho directors of the Car
ter Lake club Tuesday evening, lead to
tho acceptance of a plan by which tho
first of tho year the Omaha Oun club,
which for eighteen years has been es
tablished at the east end of tho Douglas
street bridge, will become part of the
Carter Lake Gun club.
Members of the Gun club, according to
an arrangement made by W. r. Town
send will not have to be members of tho
Carter Lake club, although It Is believed
tho majority will Join tho latter body.
Th eOmaha Oun club was forced to
abandon tta old grounds when Council
Bluffs purchased the property for a
part of tho boulevard system. The last
shoot will be held on the old grounds a
week from Sunday.

among the Nebraska alumni around the

Chamberlain Is tho man for Purdy's
position nnd great as Turdy Is, he Is an
Inferior player to Chamberlain. Cham
berlain Is recognized as one of tho great
est players since the days of Johnnlo
Bender, and thero are only two men on
the varsity squad this year who can
cuiiparc to the former Wosleyan boy.
Halllgnn and Rutherford are these men,
but they aro letter men nnd It would
bo impossible for Yale to acquire their
services.
Is All-Western Star.
Foot ball experts who have seen tho
freshman play are unanimous that he
will bo given a position on the nil-west-crn
eleven. Such a man would be a
valuable acquisition to Yalo.
The biggest Inducement Chamberlain
could be given to go to Yalo would be
his chances to make the alt-American
team. Ills chances for such an honor,
while on a western team, are almost nil,
because of the prejudice of thoso v.-ho
select such teams. A good example of
such selections occurred this year. OH

given all-American end position. In 1903
Gilchlst played end on Missouri and was
only an ordinary player.

a 140,030 gymnasium for Crelghton uni
versity by subscription among the alumni
were made at the first meeting of the
executive council of the newly organized
Crelghton University Alumni association
last night An annual pledge of 15 by
each alumnus was proposed as a means
of raising the fund for the gymnasium,
but no definite action was taken.

The opening game of the Church league
held at the Young Men's Christian asso
ciation gymnasium last evening, resulted
In the First Christian church defeating
the Westminster Presbyterian team, 21
to 8. Despite tho large' score secured by
the Christians, the game was fast and
hotly contested, one of the largest crowds
of the season witnessing the contest.
For the First Christian team the AVelgel
brothers were the stars. Time after time
the teamwork of there two players made
scores possible by their brilliant passing.
Tho sensational basket throwing of C,
Wclgel was by far the feature of the
game, he making eight of the points se
cured by his side.
For the Westminster Presbyterians,
Grcwsel was the stellar performer, mak
ing more than half of the scores for his
team.

At n meeting of the Commercial league
basket ball managers, held Tuesday even
ing .it the Young Men's Christian asso
ciation, the following officers were
elected: C. G. Lyman, president; R. It
Ralney, vice presidents C. C. Wclgel, sec
retary and treasurer. A committee was
elected to makp tip a schedule, consisting
of the managers of each of the teams
entered. The opening of the league Is
to be October 11.
One of the' hardest problems the league
has to contend with Is the small num
ber of teams entering this season. Last
year six teams were In the league, but
so far tbls year only four team! have
expressed their Intention to enter. Tho
