CORN SHOWS MUCH FIRMNESS
Yellow Cereal U n Surprise to the
Speculators na Welt its to the

Urnln Pit.
OMAHA, Dec. 3. 1913.
Thoso who havo a friendly feeling for
uhottt have been saying all along that
with the development of a demand for
I'ncle Sam's surplus, a bull market In
that cereal would be a forcgono conclu
sion. The purchase of 335,000 bushels hard
winter by exportors yesterday caused an
almost complete reversal of feeling In
this market. Those who sold wheat Sat
urday and Monday were on the buying
lde yesterdsv. And. as the market was
In an oversold condition, the matter of an
advance was easy. There was less
breadth to the market than one' would
generally look for when the activity and
strength shown are considered. While
prices closed with an advonco of VMfUo
for the day, and showed reactions from
tho bottom of m?Hc, resting spots were
HffHc below the highest levels. It was
a market where considerable caution was
shown by both buyors and sellers. The
dosei t Ion to the bull side by many of
the larger professionals nnd the fact that
they bought wheat freely, restricted any
possible bear .attacks. A liberal share of
wneat sent out on December contracts

as rapidly as It ran be loaded Into cars.
One of tho features of the Chicago
wheat market yesterday wns the heavy
buying of tho May future there and sell

on uie ouiges, the local professionals, al
most to a mun, bought more or less of
this grain.

mainly because the weather is too un
favorable for shelling or hauling to the
railroads. All of the western markets
were higher oil new corn. Knnsas Cllj
reported 210,000 bushels sold there to go
Cash corn was unchanged to c higher.
Shippers were heavy takers of cash
oats, a great deal of which was delivered
on December contracts, and as this grain
will be sent to the cast It caused a
stronger under-current to pervade tho
market. New buying was to be seen on
this market, but was scattered. Pome of
the larger elevator people sold the May
and bought the December at 3c (infer
ence.
Cash oats were Mc higher.
Liquidation on n moderato scale was
iidulced in by holders of provisions yes
tirday. The controlling influence wa-j
the break In price of nogs at toe yarns.

ever, lively buying set In, owing mainly
to insertions that the Hessian flv which
has recently been the subject of com
plaint in Ohio Michigan and Illinois was
killing the plant In western Missouri. In
addition, dispatches from Oklahoma.
Texas and. southwest Missouri declared
mat tne crop had made such an ap
proach to jointing that perils from any
free sea were materially Increased.
Speculators, who had ncgresslvelv
taken to the bear sldo of the wheat
market, appeared to lose their nerve, and
were urgent in ertorts to cover, on
the ensuing advance, offerings again be-
enme heavy, but prices reacted only a
little holders.
Corn Profited bv a general rush tn
buy during the last hour. A change to
more wintry temperature in Chicago, sug
gesting a return or heavy feeding to
live stock, was a noticeable Influence In
favor of the bulls. December shorts dis
played a good deal of uneasiness In re
gard to delayed receipts and were quick

demand helped oats upward. It was
estimated that 4,500,000 bushels had been
som in ine last two days to leave
Chicago elevators.
Demand from grain traders and from
stock yard Interests overcame early
weakness In provisions. Tho transient
setback In prices was due to lower
quotations for hogs.

HOOS There was a fair run In sight
ll.ls morning, and, ns other markets wcr
reporting weakened prlcet. loont buyers
were slow In starting out. The demnnd
pi oved to be good, however, nnd while
early bids looked to be a little easier, the
first sales were made on a steady basis.
Trade was Into In getting started, but af
ter the first rounds the movement was
tensonably active, nnd everything sold In
fair season Vnlttes wero more or less
uneven, some sales being quoted strong,
while others looked to be a little easier,
but the general market Is fully stendy.
Ilutchers nnd heavies sold In about tin
same notches as on Tttcsdny, $7 40i7,oo.
und lights moved largely at n range of
$7,ortfi7.fco. Tops prlco was $7.70, tho samo
as yesterday.
The market has been very unsatisfac
tory to the selling Interests so far this
week. On Monday prices thowed a shndo
advance only to drop off a big dlmo yes-
lemay, nnu alter today s stenny nnair,
values are still around 10c lower than at
the close of last week.
Receipts amounted to about 122 cars, or
8.500 head, making tho week's total about
SnTO head. This Is over 1.600 smaller
than last week nnd Is nearly 10,000 short
of the supply for tho same days last year.

HHHE1 All Interesting featuro was tho
size of tho receipts, which were quite
liberal for Wednesday, the cstlmato be
ing lt.wu nenci. ns compared witn t.my a
wcok ago. 11.239 two weeks ago and 9.195
on the corresponding day a year ago.
Fed western offerings predominated again
and the wheat field grades of sheep and
inmos irom mnno amounted to about
nine enrs. there being little native stuff
offered, though more than yesterday.
A large share ot the receipts were a
llttlo wet ngnln today, but everything was
in the barn In fair season, so buvcrs and
sellers commenced trading a llltlo earlier
man on tne day before.. At first buyers
did not seem an anxious for anything In
the way of killers, aa they bought very
sparingly during tho enrly hours. Later,
however, a good part of the fat stuff
sold active and In the end practically
everything waa cleaned tm as soon na
on recent days. Tho packers continued
to invor tne wen finished offerings and
anything not on that order was not as
easily disposed of.
There are a few natlvo lambs nt $7 IV),
but the bulk of the best lambs were fed
westerns and moved largely around 17.40.
The wheat field grades brought J7.15, th
same ns on wio previous nay. Kai ewes
were fairly woll represented this morn
ing, some being good enough to reach
14.40 nnd others, not ns good, sold at a
range Of S4.OfNiT4.30. Few wethers nr
yearlings wern tn sight.
Thero was not a great deal going on In
tho feeder trnde. as the supply waa light
and the demand did not seem ns brond
as on tho Inst few days. At the tlmo of
making tins report few sales were re
ported ns made.
