After, threshing and rethreshlng the
news that has come forward from Ar
gentine, the best people In the trade have
made, up their minds that the wheat crop
there is not In as poor condition as some
have been led to believe. They have had
ome- "wheat crop losses In the southern
hemisphere, but this has been In one or
two provinces only, while there has been
an Increased acreage In some further
provinces, the Incrtase being said to
have balanced the losses. When the
fact is considered that Argentina s to
have an exportable surplus of as much
as 90,000 btt., the conditions there aro
bearish. In addition to the Improved
conditions In Argentine there are the Im
provements, in, .Australia. That country
has A lot of new wheat thrit her growers
are anxious to plspose, and they are ot
tering U to the Importing 'countries at
lUlte satisfactory prices.

a hand. The larger speculators who were
once to be seen In wheat are out of spec
ulation altogether. The trade In Wall
street Is also said to be tha smallest In
maliy years.
The com market, while slumbering for
the moment. Is likely to reawaken. Shorts
in that market are quite uneasy as to
their position, and well they might be.
There is no corn for delivery on Decem
ber contracts and the shorts are likely
to bo unable to prepare enough of that
cereal to even up their position before
OJeccmbcr has passed. Cash wheat was
unchanged. Cash corn was unchanged
to lc higher. . ., . . . ..

the western packers.

stock market was confronted today with
a variety of factors undeniably bearish
It maintained a fair degree ot steadi
ness. In the forenoon prices ot the fa
vorite shares were marked up slightly
and In the later trading they developed
an easier tendency In spar. In the
afternoon the market was motionless for
long periods.
The monetary situation was unfavor
able for speculation. Call money opened
at 8 per cent and time rates were firmer.
Call funds relaxed later, but In view Of
the poor Saturday's bank statement and
the shipment ol 32.50J.OJ0 gold today to
San Francisco the prospect tor easy
money In the lnimedlate future was none
too good.
December is always a i month of un
certainty owing to preparations for heavy
disbursements at the beginning of the
year.
The Jlttolutlon suit against the Ameri
can company caused sharp declines in

CATTLE Receipts were very fair this
morning, 238 cars being' reported In. At
the same time Chicago had 26,000. While
the run at Chicago was not large consid
ering that this Is the week of the big
live stock show, stilt It waa heavier than
the weak condition of that market could
Btand. As a result early advices, from
Chicago Indicated a lower range of prices
at that point, as a result ouyers nere,
althounh local recolms were by no means
burdensome, were very slow In filling
orders making the m4rket extremely dull.
It wan In fact well along toward midday
before very many killing cattlo had
changed hands
Rtnokara and ffilrr were the first cat-
tie to sell. The best grades commanded
as much as lOo higher. On the other
hand the less desirable kinds were lio

being reported In. This Is 600 larger than
last week, but nearly 4.000 smaller than
the same day last year.
The market opened out steady to
strong, light stuff selling about steady,
while heavies looked to be a shade
higher, There waa not much of a de
mand for lights, however, and while a
few scattering loads landed at steady
figures early, the later trade was not
nearly so good. As a general thing light
stutf was very hard to move, and values
were weaker In the majority of cases.
Prices paid ranged anywhere from 37.00
to 17.50.
In spite ot the weakness ot light stuff,
heavies held up well and while a few
loads that came In late were rather hard
to move the general market on weighty
hogs can be quoted as steady to strong.
Bulk of the sales waa made around J7.60
67.70 and tops sold at 17.75, the same as
on Saturday.
Beef steers were slow sellers all day,
but In the end about everything was dis
posed of. As compared with lost week's
higher prices the market today was 10
l6o lower.
Cows and heifers showed about the
same decl'ne as beef steers, being In most
cases around 1016c lower than last
week.

SHEEP Considering a very good Mon
day's run ot sheep and lambs on sale,
bearish advices from Chicago and some
of the other outside points and the wet
ness of the local receipts on account of
rain this morning n fairly, good market
prevailed on killers. Prices on good fat
lambs were fully steady and mutton of
ferings steady to strong and In spots a
little higher as compared with the clone
of last week. Most ot the stuff offered
was cornfed, being principally lambs and
a light sprinkling of ewes and wethers.
The best fat lambs sola at a range ot
J7.301T7.o0, according to weight and quality
and the latter price was aa high as any
lambs sold tor the day. As was the case
several days last week some of the
warmed-up or halt-tat lambs did not sell
as readily as the better kinds and In
Instances prices had an easier tendency.
Included In the sales of aged sheep were
two-double decks of fed western ewes
that brought aa much aa 11.40, wtth less
desirable grades selling on down to tl.25
and some common to fair kinds at 14.00.
Trade being lively as a rule pretty nearly
everything fat was In the hands ot the
packers by io:30 o'clock.
The trade in feeder lambs nnd ewes wss
much the samo as It has been ot late.

Two men armed with a coubls barrel

at the doqr of the home of J. C. Platnur
ot the Platner Lumber company at
Trwenty-slxth and West Broadway, Coun-
cu uiuns, were foiled in art attempt to
hold up the residence when Mrs, Platner
summed the door In their faces and Mr.

and went to the door. As soon as ha

and another man who was armed with
a hatchet. An automobile came alone at
the moment and the two men made as It
to leap aboard, but suddenly dodged to
one side and disappeared In the darkness,
The man with the hatchet hurled U with
all his might at the auto, and It struck
a young woman employed In the mailing
room of the World-Herald in Omaha, The
blade, luckily did not hit her.

Advent season In the Lutheran church
and the .services at the Zlon Evangelical
Lutheran church, Thirty-sixth and La

In Ita history the congregation held Its
morning eervlve In the English language

Yesterday a brand new muffler was de
livered to the police station garage and

The word "selfish" should be abolished
from the ethical vocabulary, according to
the Rev. Frankllng P. Ramsey, who
spoke before the philosophical society In

may be a case ot too little benevolence,"
said Dr. Ramsey, "but there Is no such
thing as selfishness. The speaker In

quarantine laws. They have been com
pelled at times to break down the doors
of neoptn who were suspected of diseases
and who would not accept the services
of a phystqtan, At other times they have
searched through packing houses for men
and women who had broken quarantine,
even going so far as to use physical
strength when everything else failed.
The officers of the health department
have had to threaten sometimes with fire
nrms men who refused to obey tho orders
of the city physician. Schhiellng contends
that If the city would provide a separate
house for the care ot such as were af
fected with contagious diseases the pa
tients could be taken out and regregated
without danger to tho city at large.
Thieves Enter Office.
Thieves, suspected by Chief ot De.
teetlves James Sheahan of being a crowd
of boys, Saturday night broke Into the
office of A. H. Rushforth. Twenty-fourth
and Q streets, and stole two sacks'' ot
wheat and n rifle. The thieves had at
tempted to break Into the office safe.
In which was hidden about t60. They
overlooked tools valued at 3200. Chief of
Detectives Bheahan stated that the work
was evidently done by amateurs. 1

Detective Jack Qaughan says thai th
arrest of Charles Ward, who was sent
back to Fremont to stand trial for
burglary, was due to Officer John Jack
man's fine sense of smell which enables
hint to recognise at a whiff any brand
of tobacco which he has ever smoked.
Oaughan, who has been lately promoted
to the detective force, has made a deep
study of Sherlock Holmes' methods.
When Ward was missed the other day
Qaughan remembered that Ward hod
smoked the same brand ot tobacco as
Jackmon, Oaughan therefore took Jack
man out with him when he went out to
hunt Ward. Wherever the detective
stopped to run down a. clue Jackman
smelled around for his special brand ot
tobacco. At the Albright station the
search of the officers was rewarded.
Ward was taken while smoking a corn
cob pipe filled with JacKman's favorite
brend.

Miss Lillian Belek, 19 years bf age; at
tempted suicide Saturday night at her
home, 9M South Eighteenth street, by
taking carbollo acid. The girl had been
acting strangely alt day and the police
suspect she may have been the young
woman who endeavored to throw herself
before a street car at Twenty-fourth and
a streets earlier In tho day. Dr. Aberly
attended the girt and relieved her. She
will recover.

Death at Mrs. Kolb.
Mrs. Bmma Kolb, wife ot. Joseph Kojb,
died suddenly yesterday morning at her
home, 377 South Twenty-second street,
from heart failure. Mrs. Kolb was G
years old at the time ot her death. She
had been In good health until a few day
ago when she complained ot a slight Ill
ness. She Is survived by her husband and
two children, a son and a. daughter, Tha
funeral arrangement will be announced
later.
