Reassuring reports from Argentina lowered wheat values here today He to H45ic net; weakness of southwest markets depressed corn to a net loss of Ho to ?ic; oats declined U01c to Hc&Ho in sympathy with other grain, and provisions sank because of a decline at the yards, the net loss being a shade to 5c Weathor tn Argentina today was more settled, and private cables said the re ports of damage to wheat there had been exaggerated. Especially important to the bears was the news that drouth In the llahla Olanca district had been broken and losses from that source would not be nearly so large as had been feared. The market drooped after the receipt of this report and continued steadily downward for the remainder of the ses sion. A show of strength was manifest In the early trading on a correction mak ing the world's available supply about 1.000,009 bushels less than had been pre viously estimated, but the Argentine sta tistics caused such a selling campaign that prices did not hold. The decline In wheat united with weak ness in the southwest to lower corn val ves, uuu support to the market was conspicuously lacking after a show of firmness at the start. Large receipts at Missouri river points have weakened been able to absorb the offerees. Oats ''trade was small and featureless, and cash prices were at t a premium .over futures, Provisions showed at no time a power to rally, receipts at the yards being 4,00) more hogs than expected and the total run west being more than 19,03) greater than last year. ACTIVITY DURING FIRST HOUR Time Money Somewhat Raster and Decline tn Speoolatlon Re flected in Call Money. NEW YORK, Nov. 18. A firm under tone prevailed throughout today's trad ing in stocks. It was one of the dullest days of the year. After a display of mod erate activity In the first hour, during which prices were sent up as much as a point In some cases, they dropped off Into the same somnolent condition as yester day. In spite of the virtual cessation of buy ing, stocks were held close to the top figures of the opening rise. It was evi dent the market was in a sold out con dition. New Haven was the strong feature of the railroad list today. The stock was marked up 2 points, to a level nearly 5 points above, the low record recently established. Some of the specialties were weak. There was a drop of H in International Steam Pump preferred to 18 a low mark for the ytar. The common sold down to 5i, also the yar's bottom figure. Aside from depressing reports from the i sieei traae, waicaung a sun runner rail- steel trada. Indicating a still further fall- business and addition pr'ce reductions, the day passed without developments of significance marketwlse. Time money wai somewhat easier, and the decline In specultlon was reflected In call money, of which their was an oversupply. Bonds moved uncertainly, with soma Inactive lines falling severely. Virginia debt certificates, after rising yesterday, advanced strongly today, touching C9 as compared with 53 at the opening of the week. Tne rise was based on expecta tion of an avrcemen between Virginia and West Virginia for adjustment of the debt- Total sales of bonds, par value. $2,050.- 000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Number of sales and leadlnr auotatlons on stocks were: BalM. Htik, Vn. CM. I.IOO 71H -0 70 ! Other buyers T50 ... gja'i T&'tl : iww LAflLK A rotten market at Chicago Is having a very demoralising effect upon the Missouri river markets and the mar ket at this point has not escaped Its share i V':. . Yesterday the official reports pf the Chicago market indicated a slump In beef cattle at that point of 25&M0c as compared with tho previous Monday. At the samo time a good many of the cattle received at Chicago went through the day without receiving a bid. The cause for the demoralisation,, of the trado at Chi cago Is dua In the first place to the large receipts. Tho country seems especially anxious to unload Its halt fat and warmed-up cattle on account or a lack of confidence and because at tlm liiri. price of corn. At the same time the buy ing demand for beef. Then, too, the mar lighter than might ordinarily be expected at this season of the year. Mild weather in many localities is (milling tho consunt ing demand of beef. Then. too. the mar. kets are already beginning to fear the usual Thanksgiving poultry competition. Whatever may be the cause or causes. tho fact remains that Chicago Is suffer ing In a marked degreo from an over supply of cattle and a poor buying de mand. In consequence of this and tho low prices prevailing at that point, buyers here at at other weatern markets are very bearish and prices aro slumping rapidly in an effort to keep pace with the decline at Chicago. This morning receipts at this point were moderate, only 227 fresh cars being re ported In, but with advices from Chi cago Indicating a still further slump In values, tne maruet here was extremely slow and dull from start to finish with prices 10c or 15a lower on the general run of killing cattle. Stockers and feeders were, extremely hard to move, no one being at an anxious for that class of cattle at a tlmo when fat steers are making such a poor show ing. It Is very evident there Is only one way to remedy matters, and that Is for the country to hold back their cattle until the markets have had a chance to re cover. It will do no good to withhold cattle from this market and ship to some other point, as the market here la no worse than elsewhere. In fact, possibly not so bad. The thing to do Is to limit shipments to all markets without excep tion. To do otherwise means useless sac rifice of cattle that will be wanted later on. Along toward 11 o'clock a trading basis was arrived at and the bulk of the sales was practically steady with yester day's low time. The bulk .of the fat lambs were from the range and sold largely at a spread of 36.65y8.60. About and a small bunch of natives reached 36.85. What wethers were here sold around 34.35 and most of tho ewes went at 34, there being few If any fat year lings on tne mantel. Trade In feeders had not the Ufa it had yesterday and prices were steady to easier on most all grades. The supply of feeder lambs was about up to the av erage of the last few days, and nothing strictly good was In sight. During the early trade some lambs were good enough to bring 36.40, and some feeder yearlings sold at 35.25. The demand did not seem as broad, though a clearance was effected In good season. The day's receipts footed up some CS cars, or 14,000 head as compared with 27.000 on tho same day last week, 17,50f two weeks ago and 11,96S on the corre sponding day a year ago. As already tinted ahnut 76 ner cent of the supply was from the range, the receipts of fed west erns and natives oeing a lime ugnier than of late. Quality In general was fairly good, though nothing really toppy was on sale.
