It waa the gossip of tho wheat trade

the thing to watch, as It la the most Im

In at the present Bulls called attention
to tho limited hedging pressure, as re

offering cargoes at lower prices rela

of commission houses which were among
the largest sellers yesterday, bought up

It has been tho old saying before tho
spring wheat crop commenced to move
that hedging sales at Chicago would drive
every bull into the bear camp, but this
has not been the case. It may be heard
In wheat circles every day that there aro

because the men who believe wheat Is

that a car of old corn was sold yesterdav

corn is going south at a rate that will
keep it away from northern markets. The
main point made by the bears waa that
prices are too wgn and they will curtail

CATTLE The cattle run was small to
day oven for a Thursday, only 112 cars
being reported In. Still the total for the
four days this week foots up 22,649 head.
slightly larger than for the samo days
last week: in fact, tha largest ror any
similar period since three weeks ago and
larger than a year ago by ZfiOO head.
All kinds of cattle this morning were
very slow and dull. In tho first pdaco the
large receipts at Chicago this week and
the sharp break In prices at that point
has, according to buyers, left this market
too high In proportion. In conseauonce
they were all very backward about taking
noia ana tne market declined through
lack of buying support All kinds or
killers were extremely slow and more or
less lower than yesterday.
With feedere It waa a case of havltur
altogether too many cattle on hand. Spec
ulators Dougni 1 reel y during the early
part of tht'vweek with the expectation
that there would be at least a fair coun
try demand. Instead of that tha cnunirv
demand has been disappointingly small,
wiin tne resuu mat came nave Deen ac
cumulating in the hands of speculators.
For that reason buyers were unwilling
to take on additional cattle tha mornnr
and the market, on all kinds of stockers
and feeders was alow aid lower. It Is safe
to quota tne market on such cattle aa
fully 25c lower than last week and in
some cases lower than that Stock calves
are 25800c lower Or a big dollar lower at
tha high time.

Tho excessive receipts at Chicago yes

morning to hammer down prices here.
Quotations being relatively high, the
packer buyers set out to put trade more
In line with that at ChtcRgo and other
outside points. Sellers, however, were
unwilling to conceda as much as the
packers asked, so tho market wits abso
lutely dead a good part ot the forenoon,
there being verj few sales of conse
auenca made bv 10:30 o'clock.
Tho demand for tho feeding grades of
both sheen and lambs bolng still gooi
and the supply being light, feeder buyers
operated In good season on a steady to
strong basis. Trade was fairly active.
The early transactions Included n lot of
feeding lambs, numbering 2:i3 hund nud
averaging sixty pounds, that sold up
to $0.35.
In the end when tho offerings changed
hands fat lambs wero 4OjTC0o lower and
old sheep around SSc, with feeders fully
steady.
