buyers too long in an endeavor to force
holders In their prices. Shorts were on
the buying side of the wheat market in
the big English market yesterday and
there was an Investment demand as well.
This buying, with rather light offerings,
caused further prico gains of ll4c to IVic
for the day. Shipments of breadstuffs to
the United Kingdom have been H,000
bushels under weekly requirements and
the millers of that country are becoming
uneasy becaune of the fact that while the
continent is getting all the heat needed
and Is drawing about 75 per cent of the
weekly world's shipments, only atraut -'
per cent rinds Its way to the English
market. While It was said yesterday that
the business in Canadian wheat is small,
it' wa learned artcr the cloe that the
takings on English account were of large
proportions. It as given out yesterday
that the strength in Uverpool so far this
this week was mainly on crop conditions

antoge today In wheat on account of
more reassuring crop conditions In Ar
gentina and Australia. Despite the fact
tnat covering by shorts rallied the mar
ket there was a weak tone at the close,
with prices He to Hilc under last night.
Corn finished unchanged to H4TU higher,

varying from 10c decline to a rise of

Direct cable reports from Buenos Ayres
declared that the crop outlook on wheat
was far from Justifying the bullish re
ports of the previous day. It was flatly
asserted that the circumstances did not
warrant any uneasiness at present re
garding damage or because of alleged
backwardness of growth. On the contrary
the prospect was sad to be distinctly
favorable. Selling pressure that resulted
here received additional emphasis from
enlarged estimates of the probable yield
n Australia.
Buying of wheat at the decline reached
a liberal total and was supposed to be
chjefly for a prominent speculator, who
of late had been active In selling the

morning. Not morn than half of the es

quit bidding, and not much more was done

these had been yarded, buyers started
bidding again, prices offered at this time
looking to be weak to possibly a nickel
lower than the early trade, or Just about
steaay witn yexieraay'n best time. Move
ment on the clone was rather slow, but
sellers failed to get prices back up to
their early level, and In tho end prac
tically everytning aoiu at tne decline
named. Summing up the general mar
ket, values look to be strong to a nickel
higher with the most or the sales show
ing the loud end of the advance. Bulk
of the sales landed at l7.75tT7.8T, and tops
reaonea i.w. a neavy supply or pigs
showed up this morning, but there was a
good demand for this sort of stuff, and
while values were a little uneven, the
sales look to be about steady. It must be
remembered that the quality and weight
of the pigs vary a good deal from day
to day, and for this reason It Is impossible
to get anything line an accurate nne on
this part of the market
In yesterday's paper the dome of the
market was quoted aa being the best
time, that Is nearly a dime higher. This
waa true so far as the sales ot the early
arrivals were concerned. A couple of
trains, however, did not get In until every
thing had been sold, and when buyers
went back to the yards to pick up thW
stuff, values had slipped back to their
early level, that is about a nickel higher i
than Tuesday's, average, or 6o lower than
