GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET
Wheat is Thought by Many to Be at
Iti Lowest Ebb in Price. '
EXPORTS ARE TIGHTENING VS
Countries that Have Been Shipping
Ont Cereal Are Holding; Down
Taetr Sales In Anticipation
of Higher Levels.
OMAHA. Oct 80. 1318,
From the conditions and circumstances
surrounding the wheat market the low
price ot that grain hat possibly been keen
for a time, at least, is the opinion ot
some ot the most conservative men In
the trade. The. fact that there we're lib
eral takings ot cash, not only In the
United Stutes. but in Canada on the re
cent decline, and that flour sates at Min
neapolis and other points were on an
enormous scale, shows that the moat con
servative men In the trade believe that
wheat Is worth the present price level,
8uch men as John Washburn of ths
Washburn-Crosby company ot Minneap
olis, B. A. Rekart and other Chicago mill
ers advance tho opinion that wheat Is
cheap and that theie Is a likelihood of
the spring wheat selling to a much higher
level. The people who have been selling
the wheat at Minneapolis have now
changed their front and the expectation
Is that long lines will be taken In on that
market, as the cash article la expected to
bring a premium over the Chicago grain
before snow flies.
The exporting countries are tightening
up 6n their wheat. Even Russia Is ask
ing higher prices for the grain which
they are now holding In the Interior as
well as at fcorta. The Argentine wheat
Is about all cleaned out, yet Australia is
selling goodly amounts and Canada and
the United States are willing to sell at
higher levels. India will not be In the
market as an exnorter for nmi llttln
time, or until there Is a complete change
In crop conditions In that country, when
rorr ouerings will D4 seen. JKJtports or

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Features of the TrarflBsr and Closing
Prices oh Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Oct. 20. Reports front India
that crops had failed had much to do to
day with a. bulge In the price ot wheat.
The market closed steady at an advance
or uvio net. uom wound up with a
gain of wHc and oats dearer by tt(Ho
to hc. i7ie nnisn in provisions was ir-
of &S7Hc.
uuus took control or wneat rrom tne
start. Receipts, northwest were much
smaller than last week or last year, Rus
sian shipments were ngnter ana mere
was a decrease in stocks on ocean
passage. Blxexport clearances from the
American seaboard counted also against
tha bears, but the scare about India lifted
the maket to tne nignest level or tne aay.
Drouth In Argentina tended to sustain
wheat prices and acted aa an offset to
lata nniwta that the croD failure talk
in regard to India would prove to have
been egaggeraieo. 11 was sua arowut
there had hardly begun. Nevertheless,
final quotations were within Htftto of
the top figures of the session.
rvtm avmnaxnizea wiin wnvu, iuu-11
weather and country buylnr were of cpn--i4.-ht
-uiitonca to the bulls. In addi
tion, husking returns looked disappoint
ing, local stocks were being cut down
and the visible supply showed a big drop.
Oats rained on account -i uo uchbui
In other grain. The bulge. . however,
hrmivht out many sales on resting orders,
Although, provisions displayed some
firmness because of active investment In
lard, much of the advance was afterward
lostV Offerings by holders were liberal
on all the swells.

HOOB Receipts were llsht this morn,
Ing, about 44 cars, or 3,000 head, being
receivea. inis is a mue neavier man
last weeK. nut is about ew bead light
than for the same day last year.
Trade opened out in very poor shape
this morning. A few scatterlnr loads
were picked up by shippers at prions
that were nearly steady, but packers laid
out until nearly 10 o'clock before they
did anything, and when they finally
started their bids were fully a dime lower
than Saturday's average market. Sellers
.riianrf tn trada at these flrures. and th
market remained at a complete standstill
until well along towara miaaay.
Hrilara finally came to the conclusion
that there was no use In holding off any
longer and began to cut loose at a decline
ot fully 10 cents, most ot the sales being
made around t7.7ttJ7.80. Tha extreme
cloax was the weakest Point of tha day,
and somo sales made at this time were
quoted as being 10015c off. Taking the
market all the way through, values show
a decline ot a big dime. Ths best price
tin Id was 17 SA There was a fairly good
demand for tflgs, and the several bunches
that showed up landeu at fully steady

8HKRP There was little or no change
In fat lambs., as the bulk of a liberal
upply chanced hands In prautlcaliy tne

If thero" waa any dlfterenco It wis ror
the better, for trade on tha whole wan
reasonably active at the prevailing prices.

at last week's close.
Another moderate supply of ewes and
wethors sold at pteady to strong figures
and the Inquiry waa keen, most buyers
being anxious for mutton the same as for
the last week or so. Ewes predominated
and wero picked up largely around 14.10
V4.40. A little bunch ot wethers went to
tho scales etrly at W.W. Thero were not
enough yenrllngs to make a market.
It wns another slow trade In most nil
kinds of feeder offerings. It being rather
late In the forenoon before any movement
of consequence took place. Tho lata ar-

the considerable sorting that was nodes
sary helped to make things slow, hat
toward noon traders started In to get
what they required and prices were any
