OMAHA. Oct it. 1913.
Tner was quite a stir among, shorts In
Corn yesterday over the additional re
ports .received from auctions of the belt
where heavy rains and mild tctnpera
..tures have been' seen for several day
psat , As the" promise was for continued
unietUed weather there In sections of
'the country' where corn la raised, not
only shorts became g-ood buyers, but
there was a demand from Investors us
well. Dry weather and colder Ms now
neces.u-y. With the terrible' losses In
Kansas and., some of the other states
which go to 'make up the cofn Wlt.'amt
with senstlOonal. bull markets for aomo
time past, the' averace' speculator Is alow
to make liberal commitments on the
bear or short side, and stand on his
ahortftttp with the expectation ot taking
down a profit.
Those? who have played tho short side
of corn for months past have been
obllfred: to dig down Into their bank ac
counts .every few .days. Tha speculators
or. tho' bull or Ions' side of the market
nave enjoyed' excellent sailing.
Cash .corn was Ulo lower.
The wheat World was. obliged to taka
cognisance of the fact that the premiums
for tho cash article .were growing much
stronger and many of those who were
short and wbo were sensible enough to
oetept the fact that the market Is largely
oVfrtola were buyers on the advances of
W)tt established yesterday. On the
face of a very bearish government report
the strength -displayed -was remarkable.
The spring wheat markets were also
firmer, and advices from the-country say
there was a general absence of hedging
transactions, with, prices showing a
natural reaction.
Cash wheat was UtW4o lower.
Holders of oats failed to take to tho
government report kindly, and this wan
seen Immediately after the opening, of
the board yesterday. The upturn, in corn
and IT beat, however, helped oats no little.
Boms 'of the- more conservative specu
lators In the trade were advlstnir caution
cn the. selling side at these prices.
Cash, oats were Ho lower.

iVnnRThe market opened out In fair
shape this mornlnc. Iroeal supplies werft
moderate, and as other markets werd
opening stronger, first bide made herd
looked to DO sieaay i u'""' - -nickel
higher. Shippers bought quite a
number of loads early at an advance of
about 60, and It was not long until the
packers followed their lead, making the
bulk of their early purchases pn a nickel
higher basis. Killing orders did not turn
out to be as. heavy as on previous days
and after about two-thirds of the offer
ings had been moved at the early advance
the market come to a sudden stop and
when next bids were made values looked
to be even lower than yesterday. At
first sellers refused to trade at these
lowered prloee, but instead of recover
ing any of their early strength prices
weakened still more, and when the re
malnlnng aharo of the offerings began
to move values were In most cases " a
dime lower than yesterday. In other
words these-Ute sales show a decline of
lKn ' as compared with the high tlmo of
today. It was not long until buyers re.
fused to take any more nogs, even at
this decline, and when they began to
leave the yaras mere were several loads
still In first hands. ISarlr trade was
fairly active, but the market On the close
was vary slow .and draggy. Bulk a! all
the sales landed at J7.9O08.1O, and some
choice tmtcner weight Bturt went to t
shipper at J8.2S, the top for the day.
The week's market has been very un
satisfactory to the selling Interests. A
slight gain was recorded on Monday, but
during the next two days values broke
nearly S5o and while small advances have
been made during the last half of the
week, the week's market shows a net
decline of 116200. Receipts have been
fair all week and slow, draggy markets
have been the rule.
Today's receipts were estimated at fifty-seven
cars, or 4,000 head, bringing the
total for the week up to 27,230. This is
slightly smaller than for last week, but
Is a gain of 2.000 as compared with tha
corrcaponainir oayi ui mat year.
