Membership Hustlers of the Young Men's Christian Association Blacks Rush Jail and Free a Negress; ,0ne of Them Killed - JOMET, 111., Oct. 8. Fifty negroes and as many white people almost caused a riot Jn tho village of Romeo, near here, this afternoon, when the negroes attacked the wooden Jail and liberated Lulu Gibson, a negress, who hod been arrested for drunkenness. In the fight one negro was killed and the little jail was demolished. The woman, found on the railroad tracks,1 had been removed to the jail,' when .James Wlnfleld, after calling out all 'the negro citizens, led an. assault against the Jail, which wao defended by James Hausen, a village trustee. The negroes had succeeded in liberating the woman when Hausen opened fire. Win- field was killed. The negroes dispersed after calls for help had been sent to Joilet. The woman again was arrested. The Jail was hastily rebuilt, and, with the woman prisoner In it, was kept under a special guard. I , Crowd Storms Office of Socialist Mayor ST. MARY'S, O., Oct. 8. A mob of sev eral hundred angry citizens late today stormed the office of Mayor Wilkinson, a socialist, in the city hall, and tho mayor barely escaped rough treatment. Later he himself said that some one in the crowd had brought a rope. Service Director Schlerenback also a socialist, today shut off the city water supply of the Standard Chain company's plant until it paid about JSO0 for having a meter Installed. The manager of the plant immediately shut down the factory and many of the employes were In the crowd that went to the mayor's office. Tho socialists have bee? in office here for two years and other demonstrations against the socialist officials have been made by the 'citizens. About seventy-five men employed at the Union Stock yards struck yesterday for higher wages and pay for overtime. The strikers went out In two divisions, one at 10 o'clock in the morning and the other at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Hartnett Introduced mo tions which Councllmen Williams and Cavanaugh claimed pertained to their own affairs nnd not to Hartnett's prov ince, Hartnett flared up and declared that ho Introduced tho motions in order to get them' through and save delay. Hartnett claimed that some of the coun cllmen wore too prone to object to any thing he did. At this point most of the council joined In the dlsputo and Mayor Hoctor blandly urged "Harmony, gen tlemen, harmony." Councilman Alton then remarked something about "dry weather," referring to the condition of tho streets, and some one else audibly remarked on the propriety of a motion dealing with cold bottles. Will lam Brltton, an Omaha mall carrier, asked tho council to reimburso him for damages sustained by reason of some dofects on Q street Brltton says that on the night of October 2 his motorcycle waa damaged by an accident on Q street by reason of want of lights. He threatened a lawsuit if the city did not settle. Abolish Examining; Board, It has practically been decided to abolish the old local teachers' examining board in South Omaha in favor of the regular state examinations for teasht'rs Presi dent E. R. Leigh of the board stated lost night that. theurule. would bo amended In that reeard and that hereafter it is qulto probable that teachers holding state certi ficates would be eligible to appointment as teachers In South Omaha without any further examination. Heretofore the examinations have been held under the direction of' special teach ers' examination committees appointed by the (school board. It hsn been said that there has been much dissatisfaction with the old method of selecting teachers. If the new rule Is adopted the teachers will be granted state certificates upon passing an examination prescribed by the state superintendent The examination will b held at the office of the county superin tendent once a month. ! Janitors of the school department have asked that they be placed under the per manent civil service list in the same man ner as the teachers. It has been a source of much grief to members of tho school board to replace janitors every time the political complexion of the board changed.
