ot weakness was the demoralizing
prevailing at Chicago. The market at
that point was uuoted on Tuesday as 26
40o lower for tne week on beef steers,
with cows and heUers 40fl'Jo lower than
on the previous Wednesday. This morn
inir tThlcauo reDdrted a Hull further de
cline In addition to the ahovc, with fresh
receipts large ana with a gooa many cai
tie received on Monday still unsold.
With such reoorts at hand it was not
surprising that buyers at this, pqlnt were
very nearisu ana mat moy were inciinea
to go very slow and await later advices
from Chicago before buying very freely.
For this reason the market opened very
slow and the forenoon was well advanoed
before very much business was tran
sacted. ,
Beef steers of good quality In tha end
sold about steady, tho best westerns here
being as high as 97.75. There were no
choice corn feds, the best here being
good enough to bring 38.70. The market
on the common to medium kinds was

"hogs' Discouraging advices from other
points and fairly liberal local receipts
caused' a fresh slump In values this
morning. First bids were possibly no
more than 6ft'10c luwer, and a few sales
were made on this basis, but after the
first rounds prices weakened still more,
and the bulk of the sales was made at
figures that were a flat dime lower.
Bale-men fought the decline all tho way
through, but packers had everything In
their favor and the general market was
fully lOo lower. Movement was very
slow and it was midday before anything
like n clearance was made. On the ex
treme close values looked to be weaker
than at other times, and some sales made
at this time wero quoted as being lOirlSo
below yesterday' average. Bulk ot the
eules was made at iS.16U3.25.
Shippers also showed a big decline this
morning. Most ot their purchases were
made around 38.2uiij8.30 and some real
good, oven, light weight stuff sold as
high as 88.40, the top.
Supplies were estimated at 107 cars or
7,200 head, bringing the week's total up
to 16,228. This is a gain of nearly 3,000
head over a week ago, but Is more than
I, 000 short of the receipts for tho same
period lust year.
