Scattered liquidation In corn during the
early part of the session yesterday, which
was supplemented by selling on the part
of the same class of professionals, who
have made bo many attempts of late to

which has manifested itself for some time

CHICAGO GRAIN AND PROVISIONS
Featnres of the Trading and Closing;
Prices on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Sent. 11. Assertions that
the Canadian tariff changes need not
wait for the assembling of Parliament In
January, but may bo put in force at any
weekly meeting or tne caoinet naa a
bearish effect today on the wheat market
here.. The close was weak, lie to Ttiflo
under last night. Corn suffered a net de
cline of lHo to UHo; oats finished U
lVto down and provisions off 7H25c.
News regarding the outlook for early
entry of wheat shipments from Canada,
duty free, appeared to be In flat con
tradiction of latest advices of the previous
a ay, out waa generally accepted as true,
and was acted on accordingly. Absence
of export call, aside from a little on
weak, spots, counted further against
values, an did tho slackness of mer
chandising demand.
Aitnougn wneat raiuea somewnat at
times, the market failed to hold, and each
time sagged lower than before. Bearish
cables, big receipts from the spring' crop
and rains that Improved the prospect for
fall plowing were among the factors re
sponsible for tho defeat of the bulls.
Corn could not stand up under the ag
gressive selling by the leading short, es
pecially as longs of various degrees were
unloading to a consiaeraDie extent, liain
reviving pastures had a good deal to do
with the weakness. The best recovery
waa due to Dredlctlons of frost for South
Dakota and Minnesota, but advices came
from tnoso states tnat tne crop there
was for the most part out of danger.
Reports were current that a large
amount of oats would be shipped Into the
United States from Canada. As tho
actual difference between Winnipeg and
Chicago prices amounts to about 10 cents
a bUBhel the effect on the market hero
was quite depressing.
Provisions went decidedly lower on ac
count of continued weakness In the hog
market. Pork fell sharply under the 220.00
level, 'mere was a gooa aeai ot selling
pressure irom packers.

NEW YORK, Sept. 11. Speculation was
colorless today, with a narrow move
ment downward. Trading lacked the Vig
orous tone of yestentsy, but there was no
severe prcssuro of stocks and the small
decline which occurred was due largely
to realising sales following the rise of the
preceding session. It was a day devoid
ot Important developments. Tho under-
tono throughout was good.
vnion PaeifJo's buoyant rise ot yes
terday made It a tarent and It showed a
loss of nearly 2 points at Its low figure.
Aitnougn yesterday's rise was based on
rumors of a casli bonus Tor stockholders,
the quotation was not affected by an
nouncement that the directors had taken
no action to distribute tho proceeds ot the
sale of the road's Southern holdings..
In the afternoon thcro was Increased
selling of Steel and Amalgamated, but
toward the close the market stiffened.
Sentiment waa Cheerful. Tho favorable

In Oatober of last year, when tho rang

numbers during that season. . .
in spite of tne aimoit unprecedented
largo supply on the first, two dftya ol
tha week, followed by liberal supplies
yesterday and again this morning, a
pretty fair demand showed up in ycs
terdajr a trade and was still better to
day. Life characterized the genoral mar
ket right at the start ot business and was
a noticeable feature all the way through,
or course, owing to the fact that con
slderablo sorting waa necessary, trade
was delayed a little, but the undertone
to the trado was good. Packers sot busy
early and waded In by trying first to buy
most ot the toppy stuff on sals. Because
of competition between buyers, the best
Iambs sold a llttlo later than the Itss
desirable grades. Prices for fat lambs
wero generally steady to IO8I60 higher
and the .clcaranoa waa good.
Mutton offerings were fairly repre
sented In tho receipts and on the whole
sold steady to 100150 hlghur. Trade was
active at tho improvement ,
A good trado also took pUco in feeders
and while another generous supply ot
such offerings was on hand prloca were
steady to strong and In .nne instances
showed ah advance of lOtViBo. Demand
continued good for ycstciUay, tht matkel
being very active.

Street Gas Lamps
City Cos Commissioner Joe Butler and
his assistant, "Buck" Taylor, have com
