helped the upturn.
Despite the bullish crop report as to
com. there was a great deal of selling
of that grain today, both for long and
short accounts. Shorts were Inclined to
believe that the government estimate had
been fully discounted. Besides the rains
over night were believed to- have been
of much benefit to fall pasturage. The
close, however, was strong on account
of brisk shipping trade. Unloading by
noiaers made oats relatively weaker tnan
other groins. Shorts covered, but not
enough to causo a lasting rally.
Provisions weakened, owing to a de
cline at the yards and becauso of a bear-
isn rumor as to the government iigures
regarding the number of stock hogs on
farms. The Washington estimate, how
ever, when posted snowed tho total to
be about the same as a year ago.

llOdH Hrcrtnt of hoe this morning
Were the heaviest that they have been
thus far this week, but the total for the
threo days amounts only to 16,148 head,
being n sharp falling off as compared
with last week, but nt the same time
larger than for tho corresponding period
snipping hoes were high flyers again
this morning. Tho market on this kind
of hogs was active, with prices onywhere
trom strong t as much as lOfti&a higher.
The best hogs, sold up as high as 38,75,
tho top yesterday having been $5.65.
Shipping orders, fortunately for tho sell
ing Interests, wero large, over half of tho
hogs on aalo holnr iturchnsed hv huvers
on shipping account.
Packing hogs on the other hand wern
extremely slow and lower. Buyers were
very slow about starting out prefertng
to wait until the, moro urgent shipping
orders were filled. When thoy did make
bids their offerings were fully 10c lower
man yratcruay, ana tney stood pat nt
those figures so that the market was
practically at a standstill so far as pack
ing hoga were concerned all the morning.
Sellers worked hard to brlnir nanlrera
tip on their bids, but wrthout success, and
11 nm ciiu were jorvou 10 sen at paCKers
prices that la logi&o lower than yester
day. This means that packing hogs sold
around $7.W. some of tho better grades
bringing a little more than that and the
rougher kinds nt less figures.
Tho close on all kinds of hogs was
slow and wenk, the early advance on
shipping grades being alt lost and more
too,

nudist' Monday
nnd Tuesday's un
usually heavy receipts wero cleaned up
In very fair shape yesterday, as only a
comparatively few offerings of feeding:

Tho new arrivals numbered some 104 cars,
or 28.080 head, which was a very generous
suppty ior Wednesday, making in all aa
many as 131.931 thead yarded during the
first three days of tho week.
The most noticeable feature- in the trade
this morning was the appearance of some
activity, as both packer and feeder buyers
were looking over the liberal supply at an
early hour and began to do business in
good season. The improvement In the
dciinnnd, for both killers and anything in
the feeding line was very nnnarent.
Owing to the fact, however, that the qual
ity . oi tne iai end or ma receipts waa
little or no hotter than on tho two
Srevious days of tho week and there,
elng no strictly prime lambs or sheep
offered tho range ot prices did not make
any lorty, figures. The general market
could bo described as about steady, with
such lambs as were hare selling around
$6.5086-75. Tho supply of mutton continued
proportionately light there not being
many sales made at tho time ot making
this report.
Notwithstanding the liberal supply ot
feeding lambs and sheep In sight thla
morning prices ruled about steady with
yesterday's close, or around 40HH0o lower
than tho close of last week, The best
feeding lambs sold largely around $6.00S
6.38, with thn less desirable grades going
to me country at ao.zau'u.io. Hiricuy
good feeding lambs ot the right weight
and quality might bring aa much as $6.60,
If any such kinds were here. A lararo
number of buyers wero in from the coun
try tins morning.
