Sept 4. Mayor Gaynor surprised his friends and political enemies alike today by sailing for Europe on the steamship Baltic. Astonishment that he should leave New York on tho eve of his campaign for re-election waa some what allayed by the announcement that this trip would last only twenty days. The mayor will return on the same ship, due to arrive here September 25. Mayor Gaynor s plans, previously an nounced, spoke of a vacation trip ot two weeks to the Adlrondaks, which was to begin tbday. South State and Adams streets, and pushing his hand through the opening, seized a dozen gold watches and fled by board ing a passing trolley car. The stolen watches were valued at sev eral hundred dollars. Jewelry valued at many thousands ot dollars was in tho display window, but the burglar was frightened away by the approach ot a watchman. A club waa used to break tho window. August 27 two handbags containing sample jewelry valued at 23,000 were stolen from the some store by a thief who escaped.
