Mrs. Nettle Collins Gates died yestefday
morning In Paris according to a cable
srrurn received by Arthur W. Wakeley
from .the American consul at Paris, No
details were given In the message ano
the relative are being notified.
Mrs. Gates was a daughter of O. H.
Collins, who, with his brother, J. 8. Col
line, who died two years ago, were early
pioneers In Omaha, making considerable
money In Indian trading and In outfit
ting parties of transcontinental travelers
In tho early days. In 1864 they formed the
firm of O. If. and J. 8. Collins, which was
later known as the firm of Collins &
Morrison. Q. II. Collins died In 1S80. Be
fore coming to Omaha tho Collins' were
associated with General Grant In the
leather business at Galena, 111.
Mrs. Gates waa a society leader In the
early days of Omaha, having been edu
cated at Browned Hall and In Euro
pean schools. She was a patron of Trinity
Cathedral. She married Herbert E. Gates
at one time assistant cashier of the First
National bank, who later moved to Den
ver, where he died.
Of late years Mrs. Gatea has devoted
herself to rauslo and art and has widely
traveled, assembling quite an art collec
tion In her travels.
From Tier father Mrs. Gates Inherited
considerable property and waa also one
of tho beneflci-irles of the will of her
uncle, J. 8. Collins.

Dr. W. J. Galbralth, for twenty-five
years surgeon for the Union Pacific rail
road In Omaha, r.ow consulting surgeon
of the Harrlman lines, with Ma head
quarters at Safford, Ariz., Is stopping at
the Paxton hotel a few days enroute to
Germany, where he goes to further hlb
studies In the ueo of the Puorkowrkt
tt-rtle serum In the treatment of tuber
culosis. Dr. Galbralth just recently re
turned from Germany, where bo worked
and studied tho treatment In the labora
tories of Prof. Puorkowskl in Berlin.
While ho Is In Omaha for a few days
Dr. Galbralth says he will arrange with
some of the leading physicians In Omaha
to have a few tuberculosis patients re
ceive the treatment for local experiment,
the effects of which the local physicians
may watch and report on later.

company are really the same.
The reaction of a franchise unfair to
the people could do us immeasurable
damage.
Nothing is easier than to charge an
opponent with bad motives; no kind of a
charge should carry less weight with fair
minded men and women.
There is nothing "between the lines'
in the proposed gas rate-reduction franchise.
If the gas company did not believe it
fair to the people it would not persistently
invite YOU to read it and to carefully
consider it section by section.
Approval of the rate-reduction fran
chise by the voters means that you will get
a reduction of 15 cents per thousand feet
in the price of gas at once.
The rate reduction franchise will save
the gas users of Omaha more than $700,000
in the next 5 1-3 years alone this tuith-
unexpired "franchise value," and the, right
to admit a competing company.
If the franchise is rejected, the city and
the company will bo compelled to fight
out the dollar gas case in the courts, with
uncertain results at the-end of four or five
years. The most the city can win is $1.00
gas, which is offered NOW by the rate
reduction franchise.
The franchise was unanimously passed
by the mayor and city council, based upon
a long investigation by experts. .
It will be accepted by the gas com
pany because, although $1.00 gas will not
at present yield a fair return upon the
actual value of its physical property, the
company desires to serve the people effici
ently and adequately with gas not excelled
in the United States, and in this way to
maintain its standing as a progressive and
deservedly successful service organization.
