14 THE BEE: OMAII . FRIDAY, AI'GUST 1, 1913. UNIONS URGE EARLY CLOSING 'Ninety Days for Beating Wife Who Norman Names Committees to Visit the Omaha Retailers. SO EXCUSE FOR LATE HOURS rime Whn Whrn I.nliorlmt People 1Vorteil Sntnrtlnr Afteroon mid Conlil 3Vot Mnkc Pnrchnr nefitrc Nlxht. Prcnldcnt George Normnn of tli Omaha Central I-abor union has appointed ommlttees whloh arc calling upon some of the retailers In Omaha, endeavoring to further tho movement for early closing on Saturday evening. Trie movement for lo.MnK tho ntorca lit 6 o'clock on Batur flay evenings Is the outgrowth of. the female labor law which went into effeet a few weeks ago limiting the hours women may be employed to ntne hours 'ti any one day and not mora than fifty four Hours in any given week. This made it necessary for tho stores to abandon their policy of keeping open .intll 9 o'clock At night, or to put on two shifts of women clerks, one to go to work at 8 and get off at C and the other to go to work at 10 and get off at 9 with tin hour off at noon and an hour oft for dinner. Although the rtotoilcrs Association of Omaha met something over a week ago and decided that the stores should dose at 6 o'clock Saturday evenings during tho five Saturdays in August some of the 'in dividual establishments have not yet de rldcd to comply with tho plan. It is contended by those who favor closing that the real reason for being open jp late Saturday nights no longer exists as it did some years ngo, Homo years ago the mechanics, tradesmen and all laboring people In tho city worked until evening on Saturdays and the stores wire kept open for the accommo dation of those who drew their pay Into Saturday evening and desired to do some shopping nfter working hours. Now it is contended most of these are paid at noon and do not work Saturday after noons. The result is that they can get Into the stores and do their shopping just the same as others before night. Rides on the Boat William llraneff, 712 South Twenty-second street, returned home Wednesday evening and after accusing his wlfo with having been a patron of the steamer Saturn proceeded to brutally beat her. Neighbors called the police and Detec tives Lahey and Murphy were dispatched j to the scene. As they came In front of the bouso Braneff was Just emerging ' from the front door and was hailed by I tho officers. Evidently recognizing the two he ran back Inside with the two corpulent sleuths closo on his heels. Up the front stairs he ran to the second story, as did his pursuers. Down the back stairs he flew, with I-aliey and Murphy coming full steam ahead. Hack to the front of the house he galloped, and, thinking to throw the officers off the track, again mounted the front stairs. Iahey had run out of gasollno by this time and was seated at the foot of the back descent mopping his brow. Murphy, however, who Is more sylph like, threw her Into low speed and climbed the stairs at n gallop, llraneff kept on for tho back stairs, but observ ing the heaving mtnton of the law seated below rushed for the front descent, but alas, too lato! Murphy was almost at the top. Dashing from the hallway to a bedroom ho raised the window and Jumped to the ground, some twenty fen below, where he bruised his bank book and sprained his brain sufficiently to allow tho rnmmornf crt I.ili.v m nni.. upon his unresisting frame and inform ! him that "the carriage awAlts muh luiV" llraneff now swelters in a dungeon wearing away tho first day of a ninety day Jail sentence which ho received at the hands of Judgo Altstadt. Do Your Shopping Early Saturday All of tho progressive merchants of Omalra hav agreed to close their stores at C o'clock each Saturday afternoon during August The lfayden Store Is among the number and wc ask that beginning with next Sat urday you plan to do your shopping early In the) day a our store will closo at 6 p, in. promptly. 100 BLACK DRESS SILKS AT 68c 10 pieces 3G-inch Blnck Dress Silks, Silk Peau do Soie, Messalines, Satin Duchess and Chiffon Taffetas, real $1XM) values -Friday 68c OUT-OF-TOWN CUSTOMERS Are invited to send us their orders and In return wo aBsuro each and every one with prompt and satisfactory Bervlco.
