Pitcher Benton is
Fatally Injured
' CINCINNATI, O., July 30.-"Hiibe"
Benton, star pitcher of the Cincinnati
National league base ball club, was prob
ably fatally Injured In a motorpyclo aa
cldent In Walmlt Hills, a section of this
city, early this morning.
Denton's . motorcycle collided with a
Madison road car. At the Cincinnati hos
pital ho Is said to have sustained a frac
tured Jaw, concussion of the brain,
bruises and Internal Injuries. It Is thought
he will die.
Denton had not regained consciousness
UP to 8 o'clock this morning. He was
on his way home when the accident oc
curred. Some witnesses said he was go
ing at high speed, that ho lost control of
the motorcycle and ran Into the car.
Others said the car ran into Benton and
that the rootorman was at fault The
colllsslon was headon and Denton was
hurled to the street wth terrific force.
Denton later recovered consciousness
and physicians said that while his condi
tion Is dangerous, yet It Is not as critical
as at first thought. Benton suffered a
double fracture of the Jaw, concussion of
the brajn and multiple bruises, but. the
physicians believe that he was Internally.

hold out no hope of his being able to
play ball again this season.

the middle west will flock Into Omaha
next week to participate In the Western
Handicap tournament to be held AugUBt
6, 6 and 7, under tho atiBplces of tho
Omaha Gun club.
The Western Handicap shoot has" al
ways created considerable Interest among
all shooters throughout the entire West
and shooters from tho states west of tho
Rockies have been -entered In previous
tournaments. A large number of outsldo
cracks will be on hand, but the Omaha
men, all of whom will be entered, are firm
In their belief that all trophies will "re
main in Omaha. '
Arrangements have been made for ex
tensive entertainments for tho visitors.
