Jeff Simply Wanted to Be Sure of a Hearing
Drawn for The Bee by "Bud" Fisher
Just to celebrate Fa Ronrke's return to
the bench aa active head of the Omaha,
base ball club the Rourkea put up an
exhibition ot real base ball yesterday
and took the second game ot the scries
from the Josles by a t to 2 count.
Pa Rourke's spirit seemed to have
Gripped the players. They took chances
in yesterday's game which has been a
missing factor on the Omaha dub for the
last three years. J tut to llltutrate this:
"Hickory" Johnson stole home In the
eighth Inning, while Dill Bchlpke was
plfering the second sack. This to the
regular patrons at Rourke park seems
almost Incredible, but it is a tact and
there was no - question about "Hick."
being safe, ctiher.
In all the Ilourkes garnered four sacks
off the Jostc catchers. It was the first
game slnoe June 27 In which Omaha
players stole more than one base.
Play 1 1 it and Ilan Game.
Again Ihe hit and run game was played
oftonorl bunting was resorted to in the
pinches and the boys got away wtlh it.
This all may have been a coincidence,
but It looked mighty tweet to the fans,
wiho cheered Rourke as he sat In a chair
beside the bench and smoked a huge
Havana while he directed the play.
And Robinson heaved a heady game.
! It was only when hlte counted for noth
ing tbat the fit Joseph players managed
to get them. But when a hit mean a run
IRoby was stingier than the worst miser.
I He tightened up In the pinches to such
Ian extent that he struck out ten bat
' ters and gave but one stroll.
Aonther thing which looks queer Is the
' fact that Omaha made six runs on seven
hits. Vorlly does the bug know of games
gone by in which 'twelve and foruteen
hits meant but two or three runs and a
lost game. It was Inside base ball coupled
with the best of base running which won
for Omaha yesterday.
The Mlssouiiahs, sad to relate, hays
won but two games In the last fifteen
and seem to ba on a terrible slump, the
worst encountered by any Wetsern Uague
club this season.
Kane opened the second inning for
Omaha with a clean single to center.
Johnson was safe when Watson dropped
his high fly, Kane resting at the key
(tone sack. Qrubb laid down a pretty
bunt along the first base line. Ncff
doubled, sending Kane and Johnson
across. Schlpke grounded out and Robin
'eon singled past first, scoring Ncff.
Kane Triples In Sixth.
Kano tripled, to the right field boards
in the sxth, but Johnson Uted an Infield
fly to Ochs. . Qrubb beat out a bunt.
Kane going to third. Neff singled, putting
Qrubb on third and Kane ovor the rubber.
'Neff stole second, drubb scored on
Bchlpke's out to Westcrr.lt.
After two .Vent down In the eighth
Bt Joseph got one ZwIIUttg doubled ana
'scored on Koike's single.
Johnson was hit by t .pitched baU In
the home eighth. Grubbwraa safe at first
on; Melnkfe's error. Bchlpke forced. Qrubb
fat. second and. Johnson went to third. A
successful double steal scored Johnson.
Meinke was safe for the Mlesourtans'
In the ninth on Justice's error, Roinhart,

PAWNEES WALK OFF WITH GAME
York Attain Defeats Snpcrlor on
Cement Colts' Oroanili by Oppor
tune Hits When Men Aro
on Bases.
COLTJMBUS, Neb., July 22.-SpecIal
Telegram.) Scenes of excitement' marked
today's' encounter between Columbus and
Grand Island, Catcher Ben Diets of the
visitors started the trouble by throwing
his bat ot Umpire Qulgley when the lat
ter called him out on strikes. The ar
bitrator protested and Dletz replied by
making a vicious swing at Qulgley's face.
Columbus players interfered and Dletz
went to the bench with a 215 fine hang
ing over his head.
From the bench Dletz dared the umpire
to double the fine. When Qulgley re
fused to pay further attention to him
Diets donned his catcher's mask and
once more went forth to battle. The um
pire, nothing daunted, stood his ground
in spite of the fact that Dletz's face
was well protected by his mask. Patrol
man Nelson appeared before any 'damage
was done and led the belligerent catcher
off the grounds.
The game was a farce from start to
finish. Grand Island led off with four
scores, but the Pawnees came right back
by making six runs In the same inning.
As the contest advanced and rain seemed
certain the Islanders made every effort
to delay the game and not allow the re
quired number of innings to be played.
In the fourth Inning the umpire repri
manded Dletz for stalling and the catcher
started hia warfare in the next frame.
With the score standing 9 to 4 in favor of
Columbus and the required four and one
halt innings already played the promised
rain began to descend In copious quanti
ties, ending a star exhibition of town lot
base ball. Score:
