NEW TOniC, July 17.-The net result
ot today's trading In stocks, so far as
changes In the level of prices were con
cerned, was small. It was apparent from
the outset- that the market would not
hold td the pace set yesterday, when
Quotations rose sharply in all quarters.
First figures were lower. A recovery was
soon effected, but the later movement
was irregular nnd the close found many
ot the Important stpeks showing small
losses.
Stocks were' well taken at concessions,
but thero was a foiling off In tho demand
and buyers were unwilling to follow the
tnarket upward. , Fluctuations apparently
bore little relations to developments , f
fhe day, which had but a sllgnt bearing
on stock market values. Unexpected com
plications In the negotiation, between
eastern railroads and llielr employes may
havo exercised soma sentimental Influ
ence. More Important was the reaction
in Uniinii niui tha itncllna In American
stocks there. This was followed,, by Un
