OMAHA, July 18, 1913. It was quite popular In all the grain mu.rke.ts. on the Board of Trade yester day to secure dvullable profits. In addi tion to this selling thcro Were heavy short sales of wheat and oats and some of the more daring speculators Indulged In putting out short lines of corn as well. The average speculator who has watched crop conditions In the great corn bolt and who knows that the temperature there has done more or less damage, is confident that a thorough wettlne down of the dry section would cause a general f tampede of holders und an opoompany ng demoralisation In values. CHICAGO, July It Improved export business ran up prices today in wheat. The market closed steady at an advance of ttftc to lUc net. All other leading staples showed a gain corn, Ho to MAP c; oats, o to c, and provisions a shade to 10c. Wheat bulls took courage from the fact that Liverpool traders would not harmonize with yesterday s decline here. In addition cabhs told of rain damage In France .and. referred to complaint about the general lateness of harvesting throughout western .Europe. There was also .gossip that sales for ocean ship ment both from Atlantic cities and by way of the gulf had been much larger than reported. Weather of Just tho kind to produce rust was said to prevail in tho Dakotas and Minnesota and was being carefully watched by wheat speculators here. Ad vanced prices, however, stimulated rural sales. Tho result was to put final quota tions slightly below the top level of the day. Corn ascended because of unbroken drought and heat west of tho Missouri river. Besides cash offerings were nota bly small. Buying, though, received a check through unofficial predictions of rain. r .Disappointing thresher returns in Illi nois had a strengthening influence on oats. Higher prices for hogs served as the chief basis on which to hoist provisions. The market felt the effect of the bulge in coarse grain. Article! Open. I Hlgh.l Low. I Close.! Yes'y. Wheatl July. For the three Jays the receipts foot up 34,001, being more than 2,000 smaller than last week and 4,800 lighter than for the same days last year. The market opened out In good shape tl.ls morning, and during the early rounds tho shipper and speculator buyers picked up a good share ot the best hogs in the yards at figures that were generally MJlOo higher than yesterday. The highest price paid was IS.90, but this is duo to inferior quality of the shipping grades and doos not Indicate any weakness In values. Packers mude their first bids at steady to ttrong prices, and for quite n while made a delrmln4 effort to hold values at this level, but the demand was too ttrong for them, and In the end they were forced to put up their droves nt figures that were generally a big nickel higher Tuctdnv, and In a good many cases SfrlOo higher. The result was a rtasonably active murkut, with prices generally steady with yesterduy. Here and there it was possible to pick out cattle that looked if anything a little easier, but, on the other hand, tnere were cattle that looked stronger, so that taking tho market us a whole it could hardly be quoted otherwise than steady, as stated above. The quality of the cuttle was not so good us yesteruuy, ut least thure was notulng to compare tyttb the cxlrome top of yesterday, ' .... . Cows and heifers were a llttlo slow and the feeling In many cases weak to pos sibly a little lower owing to the fuct that some ot the buyers were out of the mar ket. After the first hour had Passed, however, a satisfactory trading basis was reached, resulting in an active market and a clearance of a very fair run xor a weanesaay at a comparatively early hour. Prices were generally steady to strong compared with yesterday. As there were so few lambs of any kind on yosterday's market traders preferred to compare tooays prices witn Monday, trado in lambs being around 16QSta higher than on the opening day of the week. There being a very fair volume of busi ness in aged sheep yesterday, salesmen wero quite satisfied that muttons sold fully steady to strong as compared with that day, Killing Iambs betnff of fairly good qual ity reached 38.85, ttop for the day, as against $3.15 on Tuesday and 38.25 on Mon day. Today's lambs at 38.35 amounted to about four cars and they were from Ore gon, averaging sixty-two pounds. The bulk of the best lambs changed hands at I3.25tf8.35. Aged stock made up about a third of the receipts, among which were about three cars of Wyoming wethers good enough to bring 35,00.
