ALMOST AS LIGHT AS AIR
Ancient Process of Making; Gold
Leaf One of Surpassing
Care.
Gold beating la one of the oldest-trades
In Birmingham. England. To a large ex
tent this trade has irnna in nrm,nv
through the competition of cheap labor,
oul t is asserted that the best gold leaf
Is still made In England. The work Is
done entirely by hand, and the customary
sign Is the picture of a glided arm bear
ing a hammer poised for the blow. The
leaf is hammered out in small home
workshops from twerity-four-carat gold,
but is first sent to the rolling mills,
whence it is returned in long ribbons one
and a quarter Inches wide and one, thou
sandth part of nn Inch In thickness Then
it Is ready for the beater. The. ribbon Is
generally cut oft into small inch nn
quarter squares, weighing about, six
grains.
The thin square is placed In the center
of a vegetable parchment pad, consisting
of 100 sheets on top and the same number
beneath. This is beaten with a fourteen'
pound hammer, and the mM. h
siderably reduced in thickness. Is placed
ueiwcen leuvea or imiiih.,i,v.i vink.
. ixcparru irom a mm but tough
membrane found in the lere-e inimMrw, f
the ox. Eight hundred pieces of the ham-
merea ie are arranged over each other,
between the leaves of the alrln he whflt
being. placed between parchment bands
mm peaien tor a couple of hours with a
seven-pound hammer. Then, the S0O
Pieces are cut un Into 3.200 nieces anil
again beaten. When the work is don$
me leat is one-rifty-thoufandih, part of
an Inch In thickness and almost aa lleht
as air.
An odd custom Is Invariably to preserve
the leaf for rate purposes in old rsiM
and, testaments, and enormous quantities
ot ineso sacred dooks are used for this
purpose. There are- nqt many goldbeaters
left now ln Birmlneham. but a
ago thera were many factories, the lartr.
est or wnicn employed 300 hapds.-rht.
