Beef trado has been in very unsatisfactory snap tnis weeK, not so mucn on account of local conditions as because of the demor alized markets east. Not only havo tho eastern beef markets opened in bad shape, but Chicago, St. Louis ana outer points have been surfeited with halt-fat cattle from Iowa. Demand has been ot very fair proportions right along and prices have ruled lower In sympathy with the severe declines at eastern mar kets. .. ... A comparatively smau proportion oi uia -..minta thta wnk had been made up ot cows and heifers, but this fact has not served to sustain values to any "ii"D: oikU avion, and while choice dry-lot heifers and cows are not otf more than isafi. .there, has been a decline Of 25 5vc on the ordinary run of grassy anu h.if.fnf rnwa that have constitt.ted the bulk of the offerings. Veal calves have also suffered a 25&'G0c decline and best veals are now selling around $10.2a. Bulls, stags, etc., have found a very fair put let at not far from steady figures. Although business In stockers and feed era has been very light the market has been more or less demoralized and prices sharply- lower all along the line. Prime fleshy feeders have been very scarce and have not-ufrerod so much, but tho ordi nary run of (itockers show a AitfuOc de cline for the week. . This included some fifteen cars which were consigned direct to packers. For the week the total 1b 67,469, which is about 14.600 heavier than last week, and 11,500 larger than the corresponding week a. ycur iiuo The market opened out very slow this morning, and prospects were that values would be some lower. When packers made their first bias It was on a ajflOc lower basis, and while salesmen were expecting a slight decline they were not looking for any such break as this. Consequently trade was very dull this morning, and us buyers refused to raise nieir uius, mo most of the sales were made at the de cline named. Shippers and speculators did not buy nearly so heavily as they have on the two preceding days, and with nearly all of the generous supply at their disposal, packers had the mar ket just about Where they wanted It. Prices paid on tho close were weaker than at any other time, and the movement at this time If anything, Is drutrgier than It was during the early hour's. Buyers did not seem to be In any hurry to clear the yards, and It was well along towards noon before"the last sales were made. Most of the sales were made around $S.40ij.45. Some fancy lights brought $8.66, the top. The week's trade shows a decline of fully 10315c. As compared with both a week ago and a year ago, the week's run has been liberal, and this, with a slack demand on moat days, and sharp breaks at other points, has forced values down ward. Quality has been very uneven all week, and while on most days there have been some good lights In sight, a good share' ot the supply has been made up of the mixed and heavy grades, some of the heavlos weighing as high as 450 pounds.
