ARBOGAST SAVES THE DAY

WJth the score 9' to 6 against Omaha
Ofld three men on bases with two out.
Manager Arbogast went to bat for Ap
iPKgate In the ninth Inning of yester
day's sumo against 8. Joseph and saved
the day, when after he had "threo and
two," slammed the ball to the left garden
jfop three bases, deadlocking the count
And enabling Omaha to win tho contest,
30 to 9 in the tenth Inning.
Not onlv does Arbogast get credit for
paving the same, but George Shrstak.
Pas rcorult catcher, comes In for his
share. He made himself solid with the
faps when he batted In a pinch in tho
eighth Inning and slammed out a single,
scoring one man and paving the way for
two more to count In tho same Inning,
Interesting does not fully explain yes
terday's game. It was filled with poor
playing, very little brilliant work In the
field, heavy hitting and daring base run
ning. It was a bargain affair, and It
befog ladles day, everyone left well sat
isfied with the bargain, but more or less
worn out from the excitement;
To begin with, tho Josies got the lead
at the jump when they too k ad van Lace
of Olavenluch before he had fairly
Started, and mado five runs on two lilts,
Iwo strolls and an error. The Rourkes
fought valiantly all the way up and had
the count 6 to 6' at the beginning of tho"
hlunth Inning. But the Hollander evi
dently were peeved over the way tha
Rourkes had treatd them and hammered
lapplegate, who had relieved Qlavenlch
When Bhestak was sent In to bat for
Glavenlch, for three hits In the ninth
for a total of four runs.
Right here Arbogast must be compli
mented for the nerve he showed In tak
ing Glavenlch out Of the game to let
Shestak bat for him In the eighth,
31avenich, after the first Inning, had
fcone like a "house afire." The Josies
could Co nothing with him and It 'was
k shame to Jerk him. but It was 'a case
f -winning tho game tight there nnd ik
lag a chance on another Pitcher, and the
Shanes was a good one, for Shtstak sum
p'aetered the ball which did the busi
ness at the time.
Applegate was "duck soup," for the
Joslcs In the ninth, but tho Rourkes
found Thomas, who relieved Chellette,
Just an easy In the tenth. Peters, who
followed Applegate, had easy work mow
ing down tho Hollanders awl Omaha
hopped on Crutcher, who followed
Thomas In the tenth, and won the game.
After the Josies had made five In the,
first Omaha started in to get the
game. In the fourth with one to tho
discard Congalton singled and scored on
Johnson's triple, who ambled across the
plate hlmtelf when Orubb grounded out
to Melnke. ,
Schlpke opened tho seventh with a
singled through short Schlpke ad
vanced him to second with a safe one
to left Bhetak was called Into the game
and batting 'for Qlavenlch, singled to
left, scoring Orubb and planting the
"Skipper" on third. Bhestak stole second
and Justice laid down a pretty sacrifice
for Schlpke to score on, and Bhestak
went to third. Neff walkked and stole
second. Ketter made a poor peg to
get Neff stealing and theh latter went
to third while Bhestak scored theh run
which put tho Ilourkes In thelead.
Kelley opened the ninth with a stroll.
Watson was an easy out to Congalton
and Oclis beat out a bunt Zwllllng
plastered the pill to center and rested
On third after Kelly and Oochs had
crossed the rubber. Hotter followed with
a tingle and Zwllllng tallied. A dead
ball put Ketter on second and he took
third on Westerzll's out, scoring on a
wild pitch.
H was a gloomy looking bunch of fans
who gazed upon Kane as he walked
to the plato In tho ninth. But It was a
bad bunch which Thomas had to face.
Kano laid down a bunt and beat the
throw to first. Congalton forced Kane
at second, but Johnson singled. Orubb
fouled to Kotter and Schlpke walked
filling the bases. Arbogast went In to
bat for Applegate and placed a triple
past Kelly In left and threo Ilourkes
went over theh plate' tying the score.
In the tenth Tho mason walked and
stole second. 'Kane attempted a sacri
fice and landed safe jn an error. Con
galton bat out a bunt filling the bases.
jonnson came across with his third hit
of theh day. It being to right field, and
Thomason scored the winning run of
the game. Score:
