OMAHA, May 20, 1913.
The fact was fully demonstrated yes
terday that some ot the larger profes
sionals In the wheat market at Chicago
are anxious to put out short lines of de
ferred futures and that they are talking
bullish on the crop situation for a pur
pose. Ono ot the larger traders In the
wheat pit tn Chicago was making claims
of further deterioration In the prospective
crop of Kansas, yesterday, when at the
same time It was given out on the floor
that he was putting out short lines in a
big way through at least three commis
sion nouses.
In the absence of buvlnor orders from
thedlstrlcts in Kansas where the crop Is
the districts In Kansas where the crop Is
lively mannor, the average speculator la
enabled to read between tho lines that
while there may be some losses they are
not serious, as tho average sender ot
damage dlalms Is anxious to make the
trade believe. In case ot sensational
losses to the wlntor wheat crop of the
southwest. It would be like finding money
in tno street to taae on any or the de
ferred futures, as price would be sure to
advance when the trade became con
vinced that losses were a fact and not
a myth.
The trade In wheat has broadened out
materially since thn unfavorable crop
prospects commenced to come forward,
and there Is a fair sprinkling of outside
orders on both tho buying and selling
side. When the claims of crop deteriora
tion are taken Into consideration, how
ever, the volume of trade must be oalled
comparatively small when other years
are considered.

Wool Market.
BOSTON, May .-The Commercial
Bulletin tomorrow win say; "A more
optimist! a attitude appears to have been
adopted by the wool trade in the last
week, although this attitude Is highly
tempered with caution and does not neo
es arily mean that prices will rise rap
idly, but that there is a disposition to
operate more freely at current rate. A
large line of delaine wool has changed
hands at prices freely down to a wool
basis. There has been some further trad
ing in new Utah and fleece wools at last
week's rates.

CATTLE Cottlo receipts were ot very
fair proportions for a Thursday, some
2,700 head being reported In, but tho
quality of the offerings was hardly as
good as on Wednosday. Tho late market
on Wednesday was actlvo and strong and
that Is ths way trade opened out this
morning. All tho Crttlsod beef men had
fair orders to fill und lost no tlmo In
filling them as far as possible at prices
that wero strong to a sliude higher than
Wednesday and not a great deal different
from tho lattor part of last week. Best
beeves, heavy and handywetght, sold up
around e8.10U8.15 and the bulk of the
fair to good 1,000 to 1,360-pound cattle
sold at $7.75(B8.00. A good, early clear
ance was made.
Thore was not much change In the
market for cows and heifers as com
pared with Wednesday. Offering were
autta limited and thero was a very fair
demand both from local packers and ouU
side butchers as well ad consiaeraoio in
quiry from feeder buyer. Thore wns a
strong, healthy undertone to the trade
and values In general wero In pretty
much the same notches M at this time
last week. Veal calves, bulls, stags, eta.
were quotdoiy steady, A batter uemanu
were quotably steady.
A better demand featured the trade tn
stockers and feeders this week and de
sirable offerings of all weights are In
the neighborhood ot logjiso higher than
last week. Volume of business, however,
has been comparatively small and feeder
buyers are again tailing a good many of
tho warmed up cattle at better prloes
than the killers are willing to pay,

NEW YORK, May 29.-Tlie Important
development toxlny in the stoett market
wns thp publication by the Union Pa
cific directors ot alternative plans for the
dlspova! of the company's 126,666,000
Southern Paoltla stook.
Ono of theso plans Is novel In the sense
that it suggests public Mds nfter the
manner of a olty bond offering
Judging from the course of the Hnrrl
mnu Issues, which were Irregular In the
early session, but bees mo feverish on
imbllcntllnn of three plans, the specu
lative public seems unable to grssp the
Import ot this latest move. Union Pa
cific milled townrd the close, while
Southern Paclflo made a net loss ot 1
point.
Elsewhere In tho active list. Canadian
Pnolflc was prominent for Its activity nt
receding prices. As tisunl. the s-'lHr,?
wns ntt.lbuU'd to Berlin, but some of tho
liquidation wns traceable to Pnnndlsn
sources. Various stocks In the so-called
Ooulrt and Hawloy groups were very
woak, recording tho lowest prices In some
years. Tho Industrial district wns no
tably firm by comparison.
Substantial recovery In St Louis A
Ran Francisco 4s nnd 6s was tho foaturo
ot the bond mnrket. In government Is
sues Panama 8 declined H per cent for
thn week on calls. Total sales par value,
