Those were the only hits made off Seaton, who pitched the last six Innings for Phila delphia. The defeat was Beaton's first this season, the score being a tie when he went in. The Philadelphia threw away many chances In the early Innings by reckless tease running, apparently calculating they had the game won. Hilton of the Royal Liv erpool Golf club, who has held the world's championship title three times and has been British-American champion and Amateur champion of the United States. Playing with machine-like accuracy and showing no fatigue, despite the gru elling tight with A. V. Hambro of tho Royal St. George's club, whom he de feated 1 up earlier in the day, Schmidt In the fifth round fairly smothered Willie Grieg of New club, St Andrews, who yesterday downed Munn, the famous Irish player and a hot favorite for the championship. Coming In he holed out in 4, 8 and 4, never giving his op ponent a chance, and won 8 up and 9 to play, Harold Weber of Toledo, O., was elimi nated by Worthlngton of the Mid Surrey Golf club, who won by 1 up. Weber's defeat leaves Schmidt to rep resent America among the eight who re main to compete for the championship. But the form he showed against Grieg was in such striking contrast to that dis played by Hilton, who pnly Just scraped through in his match with Gillies, win ning at the nineteenth hole after a tie, that the Massachusetts youngster has been made an even money choice against the renowned English player for to morrow's match, and only 6 to 1 is lall against Schmidt as the ultimate winner, Schmidt has a beautiful, even swing. His driving is excellent a long, straight ball down the middle of the course. His approaching Is deadly In accuracy, and his pitching and putting have Improved greatly since play began. He worked his way through college and Is paying the expenses of the trip by special work.
