Wheat EeporU Are Conflicting and

CORN AND OATS UNDER CONTROL
Utron jrrit Concern. In die Specula
tive World Hare Strangle Hold
Upon All the Smnllcr
Rrnlns.
OMAHA. May Jl. 1911
The word "corfllctlng-' wiir hardly con
Vey to the reader the difference In the
messages received on the Ueanl of Trade
yesterday from points In Kansas as to
the condition of the growing wheat. An
advance proofshect of the Modern Miller
admits that, while tho crop has gone
backward a little, the deterioration Is eon
fined to small and 'scattered areas and
not necessarily of a serious nature. There
were adltlonal reports from the south
wt ' losses In sections, and. as some
of these were denied, the speculative
world was left to Its own Judgment as
to the proper slde'of the wheat market
to bock.
One Of thlt nldn.t arwlltnlnra In ih
Chicago wheat market said last night
mat ne considered many of the reports
SOW coming forward tin crnn cnmlltlnna.
9 whether they aro favorable or unfavor
able, as valueless on the whole
while wheat speculators continue to
move, in a body, there was lees of this
than was to bo seen a week or ten days
ago. The larger houses are receiving
reports from every section of the winter
wheat belt many times during each ses
slon, and It was more noticeable yester
day and that along with these messages
were either Uuylng or selling orders. The
xact was ruiiy demonstrated that those
who are enabled to secure profits In
wheat are showing no -Inclination what
ever to tarry- It may be said without
i ear 01 contradiction that a choppy mar
ket will be seen from this time until the
harvesters are sent Into the fields later
on. There is UUlo In the cash situation
that may be called encouraging to the
trade at large, especially to the holders
01 eiiner tne tuture or casn in the cm
c&go market
J. Meladay. one of the larger export
Ins concerns in Canada, with headquarters
at Toronto, passed through Chicago yes
terday. Ho sold that nearly all the
wheat now held In Canada has been sold
to the foreigners and that It will be
moved out as rapidly as possible- That
while some exporters In tho trade were
reporting business as dull, he found Im
porting men in tne marKet right along.
Cash wheat was unchanged to Aa higher.
Corn and oats are controlled by some of
tne strongest concerns in the speculative
world and there was good buying on all
the soft spots, and the market failed to
show any signs of sharp prlco losses on
a prospective change in conditions. Cash
corn was Ho higher to Ha lower. Cash
oats were unchanged.

Prices on Jlonril of Trade,
CIIICAOO, May 21. Increasingly un
favorable prospects In southern and west
ern Kan nan carried the Wheal market
today upgrade. Closing prices were firm
at as advance of lo to lHSlHb oyer last
night. Corn finished unchanged . ta Ha
higher. Oats varied from a shade off
to Uo gain. Provisions strung out front
15c decline to an upturn of 6c
Incessant dry weather and a forecast
of shortago started wheat shorts to buy
Ing. Now Investors also took a hand,
making a liberal volume or business,
much In contrast with the usual week
end curtailment. Bulls wero especially
Impressed by statements that 3,000,000
acres In southwest Kansas were In a
critical condition, with each day enlarg
ing the damage and making the danger
worse.
HKtvt of a substantial falling off of the
United states visible supply total dis
couraged the bear side in wheat and so,
too, did word that exporters had dis
posed of a little new winter. The mar
ket at no time had any Important re
action. Export clearances of wheat and flour
equaled 931,000 bushels. Primary receipts
of wheat were 180,000 bushels; a year ago,
303,000 bushels.
In the corn pit selling by cash houses
and news of heavier country offerings
offset the bullish action of wheat
Weather conditions favored planting.
Profit-taking by longs weakened oaU.
Provision trade was only local. The
one notable feature was an erratic dip of

CATTLE Although a very liberal run
of cattle Bhowed ud for a Saturday, some
24 loads in all, the arrivals were prac
tically an southern steers en route to tne
northwest, and there was nothing of any
conseauence in the way of beef on sale.
Receipts for the week have been moder
ately liberal for this time of year, show
ing an Increase of nearly 4,000 head as
compared with a week ago and a year
ago. The market has been uneven and
nervous throughout, ouentng with a
sharp decline on Monday and Tuesday.
There was more or less recovery on
Wednesday and 'Thursday, but Friday's
trade was weaK ana even desirable lirm
and handy weight steers are selling no
better than they were at tne close ot last
week, while the heavier grades show a
cllne ot fully IOo In some cases. Eastern
beef and cattle .markets are still In a
very uncertain condition and the under
tone to the local trade is ratner wean
than otherwise.
BuoDlles of cows and heifers this week
have been of rather limited proportions
and largely for this reason they have sold
at prices not so yery mucn oiiierent
from last week. There .was more or less
decline in values the first of the week,
but under the Influence of an active do-
mand .from both local packers and out
side butchers the market braced up dur
ing the latter half of the weeK ana out
let for practically all grades of cows and
heifers was very 'good. Veal .calves, bulls,
stags, etc, have met with a good Inquiry
from start to finish ana closing quota
tions are substantially the same as they
were a week ago.
Business In stock cattle and feeding
steers has been-about the smallest of the
season. What few green and light weight
stock cattle have been Included In the
receipts have met with a ready sale at
steady to strong prices and show about
1016o advance for the week.
On the other hand there has been prac
tically no demand whatever for the
fleshy and warmed up steers and these
are largely going to the killers at prices
that are not materially different than a
week ago.

lioas With only a moderate run In
sight and advices from other points In
dicating slightly better prices, the local
market opened strong to 6c higher. To
all appearances there was only a fair de
mand and several loads sold at the ad
vance quoted. It was not very long,
however, before It became apparent that
ta.ll buyers were badly In need of hogs and
were willing to pay the salesman's price
to get them. From this time on the
market was a red hot affair. Prices went
skyhlgh and the trade turned out to be
one of the most active, and at the same
time most uncertain that has been seen
at the yards In many a day. Everything
had been sold long before 9 o'clock
and values were better on the
close than at any other time. The
trade could be summed up as being about
IOo higher than yesterday's average.
Values on the opening were strong to Bo
higher and op the close looked to be all ,
of 10016c higher. The majority of the
sales ranged all the way from 38.303.45,
and some good lights sold as high at 38.60.
For the week the market Is just about
IOo higher. Yesterday's trade was just
about steady with the close of last week. I
so that today's 'advance Is the extent of
tho week's Improvement. Values have
been fluctuating all week, but the tone
of the trade has on the whole been
strong.
With the exception of Thursday's ex
cessively heavy receipts the supply has
been moderate all week. Today's run
amounts to aboue seventy-eight cars, or
5.493 head, amklng the total for the week
6L04S head. This is a shortage of about
6.000 head as compared with a week ago
and Is 18,600 head smaller than for the
corresponding week a year ago.

SHEEP Today being a Saturday, there
was notning doing in sneep and lamDS,
therefore speculation remained the same
as on Friday. While the general market
fluctuated a little during the week, prices
have returned to about the same notches
as at the close of last week, and trade
conditions are no better than those pre
vailing a week ago. it is still the con
sensus of opinion In trade circles that a
weak undertone lingers In the general
trade of both sheep and lambs, and there
Is apparently no good reasons for be
lieving that any Improvement will take
place next week unless the receipts fall
on considerably. The supply this week
has been very moderate, as no more than
