GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET
Wheat Situation Continues to Be a
Nervous .One in Pit
CORN SHORTS NOT TROUBLED
Lone on Yellow Cereal for Mar Deliver-
Are Not Likely to Net

Feature of Trading.
OMAHA. May 19, 1913.
Thore are two important factors sur
toundlng the wheat market Just now.
On the one hand may be seen tho losy
crop prospects, which may possibly show
n falilim itf l.etwcn tnls time and the
ripening ot the bruin, while on the other
side aie the concentrated holdings of the
May future at Chicago, coupled with the
fact that those who own anu may control
enough ot the cash attlcle to prevent the
shoriB from doing a great deal of dam
ago in the matter ot evening up tholr
positions by making deliveries on con
tracts. Those who own cash whoat know that
i".?? 2C ths ve'' b"t nuallty and that It
will ba wanted before another crop is
available and seasoned for milling pur
poie. Conditions may be said to be ab
normal. Witli a bumper crop of winter
wheat almost at our doors and with tho
prospeats for an average crop of spring
wheat the situation In tho pit continues
nervous from day to day. Daring shorts
have put out lines of defeued futures
with the expectation of covering these
contract! and aeourtng a profit.
It U only necessary for the casual ob
server to look backward even as short a
time as a week to sea wheie the short
sellers have landed. They are generally
lorooa u ouy tno wneat sola snort at a
loss, and the ttade not unlike the Small
fish, are to be seen In "schools."
Were the speculators of the country
more divided In their actions the sharp
price changes to be seen from time to
time would not be In evidence, but the
temper would be more oven. Cash wheat
wss UHc higher.
Those who are long on corn for May
delivery at Chicago are not likely to glvo
the shorts a great deal of trouble, as It
is generally believed that the open Inter
est In the May option is not a large one.
The "cotton crowd' stepped out of the
May option with handsome profits, but
that month was taken by a Chicago con
cern, which has made the most out of It
and now stands to make additional prof
its. This, however, will be controlled by
the run of corn, which Is promised to
increase not only at Chicago, but at some
ot the other markets of the country.
Cash corn was unchanged to Ho higher.
Most traders think oats should continue
to show a good tone and they advise buy
ing, them on the setback. Only UQo

gave tho wheat market today a decided
lift The ciose was firm at an advanoo

Falling oft in the visible supply re
ceived emphasis from a out ot 519,000
bushels In Chicago stocks. It was In
regard to the local end of the situation
that shorts evinced chief solicitude.
Tightness of May (option speedily be
oamo pronounced and caused that option
to lead the advance. There was also a
big drop in the amount ot shipment on
ocean passage.
Belief that some hard winter wheat
hnd been sold here for export checked
the bear effect that Ideal weather In the
spring wheat crop belt othorwlso might
have had. Talk that hitherto rosy
prospects for humper crops southwest
were not quite so bright also operated
to sustain prices.
Scaboani clearances of wheat and
flour today equaled 537,000 bushels.
Primary receipts of wheat were 665,000
bushels against (56,000 bushela a year ago.
Corn was also strong from tho start.
Iowa points reported that much corn
land was under water, and that the
weather was, too cold. Nebraska, too,
sent word of delayed planting. Oats
shorts bought on account of scantiness
of moisture In Illinois.
Denvtnd for provisions exceeded the
offerings. Packers sold sparingly or not
at all. and closing figures were at the
top for the .day,

Itnmln,
NEW TORK. May 19.-Tho partloular
point ot Interest In today's stock market
was the ncute weakness of a number
ot low priced tatlroad stocks and bonds.
St Louis & San Francisco securities
stood out conspicuously with docllnes of
6 points for the common .nnd seconil
preferred stook; 12 points fur tho first
preferred and nearly 3 points for tho 6
per cent bonds. The first preferred at
35o was the lowest since tho low record
of S4V.0 whs mado in ISStS. and the second
t preferred touching 12, won at the bottom
tlgure slnco 1897.
Inquiries ollcitod no official explana
I tion of tho weakness of the securities.
Rock Island shares also were heavy.
I In all eleven railroad stocks touched tho
low prices for the movement, me mar
ket In general held up well In the faco
ot these declines and of rather active
selling for foreign account. In the
second "half of the session foreign stocks
advanced above Saturday. Leaders were
awaiting the outcome of tomorrow's of
fering of $45,000,000 bond Issue abroad.
Bids for tho city bonds from out of town
banks wore being received today by tholr
representatives here. It Is hoped that
If this Issua and the Chinese loan uro
attended with tho success which Is pre
dicted for both of them the tesult may
bo to stlmulato the Investment demand.
Bonds wore Irregular, weakness ot
speculative Issues offset Improvement
elsewhere. Total sales, par value,
$1,618,000.
United States bonds wore unchanged

CATTLE Cat tlo receipts wero qulta
Uberul this morning, 208 cars being re
ported in. This is double the run of a
weok ago today and about tho same as
on two and three weeks ago. At ths
eamo time largo receipts wore reported
from other selling points and prices wero
lower everywhere, this market affording
no exception to tho general rule.
Beef steers were very slow nnd dull,
especially on the heavy kinds. The mar
ket In addition to being slow was safely
10tfl5c lower, and In somo cases mora
than that, tho geateat decline being on
the heavy kinds and the least on the
light weights.
Cows and heifers wero around 1016o
lower and they too were very alow and
dull, so that tho forenoon was well ad
vanced before enough business wag
transacted to really quote It as a market.
There wero very few stock cattlo and
feeders here, and tho market In conse
quence did' not show very much change,
although tho feeling was easier.

HODS There wax a fair sized supply
In atKht here today, about 103 cars, or
7,000 head, being reported In. This Is
nearly l.ouo smaner man a wee msu, uui.
Is nearly 1,1)00 heavier than the same day
a year ago.
The market bpened in fair shape and a
small share of the supply, possibly twenty-five
loads, changed hands at figures
that wero about steady. About this time.
however, prices began to tumuie, ana
from then an it looked as though the
market would be flat, 6c lower. With so
good a aemand during the early rounds
salesmen were slow to agree to any
suoh decline, but the buyers were firm
and after an hour In which practically
nothing was done the rest of the supply
began to move at figures thai looked to
be just about a nickel lower. On the
close, when practically everything had
been sold, the trade strengthened up a
little, but It was only a flash In the pan
and values never re rained their former
level. Taking tha market as a whole
values can be quoted as steady to 6a
lower. The bulk of the sales was made
at tS.2S43.80. During the early trade
shippers bought some fancy lights as high
as 3S.4S, witn the exception of the time
when absolutely nothing was done there
was considerable activity in evidence and
