TITO OMAHA SUNDAY REE: MAY 11, 191.1. 3-A Nebraska Nebraska FIND ROOM IN STATE HOUSE Space Under Roof Affords Place for Many Offices. ONLY NEEDS FINISHING OFF Rxpcdltlnn to Ilnflrrn of Cnoltol UnlldlnK niMclonpH Plenty of Office Hnom Avnllnlilr at Siunll nxpenno. (From a Staff Correspondent.) LINCOLN. May lO.-(Spedal). The state board of public lands met this morning and with represtntlves of the press, made R trip up Into the hitherto unexplored regions of the state house on tho fourth floor, for the purpose of seeing If some thing could not be .discovered which would tend to relieve tho congestion down on tho first floor where everyone Is hold Ing on to what he lmn like a miser to a ten dollar sold piece. It was found that the situation there Is such that It will bo comparatively easy to fit up departments which will be Just as good and In many ways for pref erable to those on tho second and thtid floors. Tho state house was bllt with the Idea that possibly at some time It might bo necessary to use the fourth story for office rooms, as the floor tim bers are already laid so that all It will be necessary to do Is to lay the floor. Partitions of brick divide up the space with openings for doors. The celling Is high and about all that will be necessary to do. Is to remove tho wooden braces and place steel girderB to .hold up the roof, lay the floors, plaster the walls and put on the steel ceilings. Plrnty of llnmii. Windows may bo easily cut In-the out ride walls or the present windows re placed with others of larger dimensions. There Is plenty of room fpr corridors find with an elevator running to the fourth floor, the offices there can be mfado easily ncccssable and and very comfortable. The construction of tho dome Is such that exceedingly good ventilation can be secured through the dome down to tho fourth floor and through openings In the Bide, which wilt make the offices well aired and cool In the summer. Tho cost of fixing up this floor will bo about one-half what It would cost to fix up thn basement, as was first planned, and will, It Is estimated, reach In tho neighborhood of $30,600, although many of the members of the board think that It can be done for much less. State Architect Burd. P. Miller will be culled to Lincoln at ttnee and the work will be commenced Just as soon as plans can be prepared and contracts entered Into. Will Give Mneh Room. It will not be necessary to use the space over the senato chamber as was at first determined, as It Is thought that the north and t,outh wings will give all the room needed. AVhen completed It will give additional space such as Is now used by tho supremo court, clerk of the court, consultation room of tho Judges, secre tary of the senate and oil Inspector, at torney general, public library and other minor offices, Tho proposition looks so good that Chafrman' Henry T. Clarice of the vall way commission said that they would be willing to move their whole department to the fourth floor. Others are begin ning to cast longing eyes toward the heretofore despised fourth floor, and It may be that the fellows who have been holding on 'to their present offices so hard and refusing to give space to the new board of control will find that the new quarters will be tho most desirable In the building. In any event, the out look from the windows o ftho fourth floor will bo very pleasant, as it will give a fine view of the city and sur rounding country. Other Iloom Avnllntile. In the event that more room should be needed there Is plenty of space above the senato chamber, and by lowering the celling about six feet a large department can be constructed the slzo of tho present senate chamber and not any way spoil the looks of the chamber, except that tho fine landscape drawings, water scones, German beer Harden paintings, the pyramids and the -Sphinx will have to be destroyed after the state has paid thousands of nickels to an Imported painter to reproduce those historic scenes wldch brought out that eloquent and soul-stirring address from Senator Placelc of Saunders county during the closing hours of the late Besslon of the legisla ture, and all thut will be left will be the memory, i Prats Make Better Scholastic Showing LINCOLN.
