GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET
Wheat Market Questions the Pres
ent Crop Report.
CORN TRADE 18 NOT LARGE
Et(b Though Frlees Are Slightly
Advanced There la Not Much
Going On with the Yel
low Cereal,
OMAHA. May 9, 1913.
The question In the speculative wheat
world Is, "Has the present crop promise
been discounted and nr vninn in ihnw
any change for the better?" With a crop
prospect or 6i3,6i7.ow bushels of winter
wheat, there Is littlo doubt In the minds
of wheat traders that there will be a
great deal more than enough of this
grain to go around. A year ago the
crop prospect was for only 331,692.000
bushels. The report In wheat was con
strued by everyone In the trade as a
Bearish document. nJthnup-h it ihun
as was looked for. and showed some fall-
n.Lr,.S? """pared with last month.
With this document out ot the way, It
Is hoped that the market will be extri
cated from the rut In which it has been
running for some little time. It Is the
Wish Of the trade that th oiituMor will
again be seen In wheat and that some-
ining oi a Duiiisn character may develop
that will cause them to come Into the
market as buyers.
It may bo the sentiment favored the
bears no little after the receipt of the
government crop reports last night, and
It may also be said that at least two of
the larger buyers in the Chicago market
are talking bearish on wheat and that
tney are DacKing up their opinions with
their money.
11. R. Graves of London was on the
Board of Trade yesterday and he said
that the Importing countries must have
more wheat than they are willing to
acknowledge. This gentleman, who, by
the way, Is well posted on grain condi
tions over the world, told of poor wheat
that Is now being marketed from Russia
and the interior of the United Kingdom,
as well as the continent, and he said that
the weather In these countries at har
vest time last year as well as now, re
duced the quality In all the Importing
countries to a level of feed wheat. Cash
wheat was MUc higher.
While the price of corn showed ad
vances all around yesterday, the volume,
of trade was not large. It was generally
oeiievea that tne weaK longs in tne May
oitlon have liquidated and that there
was a better cash Inquiry, although the
sales for the day were only 83,000 bushels,
Those who are closely connected with tho
country are of the opinion that on the
present basts ot prices the receipts are
not likely to increase, as farmers will
not loosen up unless they are enabled to
secure higher prices. Cash corn was un
changed to Ho higher.
The action in the oats market was much
the same us In corn yesterday. Pre
dicted showers for some ot the states,
where dry weather complaints are heard,
started short selling early, but the mar
ket closed strong. Cosh oats wero V4c
higher.
Clearances were: Wheat and flour.

who had oversold yesterday In anticipa

When the May flurry struck the wheat
Pit the market had already begun to
harden. Supplies were found to be very
light at the opening and values Improved
In spite ot generally lower cables, fins
growing weather for the domestlo crop,
large primary arrivals and rather mod
erate shipping trade. The ensuing bulge
was soon checked by free selling by large
elevator concerns. A alight rally came
near thu close, on advices ot fair export
sales, and the finish was very firm.
Primary receipts of wheat today wero
611,000 bu., against 463.000 bu. lost year.
Seaboard clearances of wheat and flour
equalled 370,000 bu.
Com was helped by reported crop dam

delays to shlpmentn and wet weather.
Strength In cosh markets also stiffened
prices. Prices stiffened on porslstent re

Provisions trade was very light Such
littlo strength as the market showed was
due largely to better prices at the close.

Upturn After a Depression.
FALLING OFF IN STEEL ORDERS
Kmphatle Vote on Tariff Dill nnd
Japanese 8ltnarion Restricts
Speculative Activity.
NEW YORK, May 9.-Aftcr a slight de
pression In the early trading followed by
an upturn which put the Harrtman stocks
and a few others a point above yester
day's close, tho mnrkat came almost to u
nait touay, m one hour only 8,(w shnrtAi
were traded In. The movement as a
whole was of little Importance and proved
to emphasise the lack ot demand for se
curities and the reluctance ot traders to
tnke a definite Position In tho market
at this time.
Failure of the market to respond to
yesterday's brilliant cron report encour
aged bear traders to put out new lines
at the outset but they wero unable to
bring 6ut long stock and quickly re
versed their position. Tho ease with
which the market rallied Indicated a
strong undertone, but this apparently
was due to nothlhrr mora than n until. out
condition,
Forecasts of the quarterly United Slates
Steel report Indicate a falllntr off In
orders. The emphatlo vote by which tlio
tariff bill Passed the house and tlin rUii-
atloo arising from California's atand on
the Japanese question were other Influ
ences which played their part In restrict
ing speculative activity. There was some
further pressure against standard in
vestment shores. Now York Central,
Pennsylvania. Delaware & Hudson and
American Telephone wero among the In
vestment stocks which touched new
prices for the year. Rumley preferred
broke nearly 4 points on the announce
ment that notion reaaxdinir the dividend
would bo postponed.
Known movements of currency for the
week Indloated that tho gain In cash from
the Interior hod more than offset the Ions
due to gold exports. A gain on the week
or aoout w.uw.ouu was forecasted.
The bond market wan irregular, with
Important Issues as a rulo well sustained.
Total sales, par valuo, $1,400,000. United
States bonds were unchanged on call.
Number of sales and leaning quotations
on stocks were as follows:

HOas With receipts moderate, and ad
vices from other points, of a bullish na
ture, hog Values took a decided turn for
the better this morning with the result
that the average market was fully 100
higher. Some salesmen wore of the opin
ion that prices paid for mixed hogs were
In somo Instunces even batter than that,
but the general market can be quoted as
being just about a dime higher. Shippers
and speculators did very little this morn
ing, and their purchases did not amount
to more than a few loads. Thu bulk of
the hogs sold at $8.166.25. the latter
figure being the highest paid. The mar
ket was active and practically every
thing had been sold by a little after 9
o'clock. The quality of the offerings
bhowod some Improvement this morning,
us Is shown by the scarcity, ot the sales
at the lower figures.
The receipts this morning amounted to
about 10S cars of 7.600 head, making the
total for the week 45,621, This Is some
thing like 2,000 larger than last week,
but Is 7,000 small-r than for the same
days a year ago,
